Lady Kahina Loren, born into the Prism system's powerful ruling family, is desperate to throw off the shackles of her privileged lifestyle and discover herself, but ambition crumbles when she faces death at the hands of the one person she thought she could trust.

Great story

Enjoyed every moment of this story, and learned a lot about the deeper lore of the Elite universe. a cast of characters just big enough to keep it interesting, but not so many that you lose track of who is who. Wonderful mix of high tech 33rd century and Renaissance technology and society. Loved the political intrigue woven into the plot, and while the writing did have a few brief moments where it got a bit stilted and repetitive, Toby Longworth's performance (and the background SFX/music) really shine. Highly recommended to any fans of the Elite universe, and to anyone who enjoys grand space opera in general.

Elite Status For Sure!

Great listen. Especially loved the sound effects. Only minor thing I would have changed, would be having a woman voice the female characters. The narrator did an excellent job on his own though.

Incredible audio integration and narriration

I haven't even finished this audiobook yet, but I HAD to drop a review. It's more an audio trip to the cinema than an audio book. It takes the incredible sound design of the game it's based on, and seamlessly integrates it into the story, the setting, and even the narrative that's happening. Incredible writing, incredible narration, absolutely the best Audiobook I've ever had the pleasure to listen to.

For those unsure if it's the right genre for you - firstly, it is. Secondly, I would categorize it as a similar universe to Firefly, with some hardcore Game of Thrones storytelling.

So... When's the sequel gonna be ready for Audible?

Great for fans of the game

Great for fans of the game, especially if you're more interested in the stories surrounding it. It was great to hear the sound effects from the game used throughout for a better sort of visual experience.

I can only hope that Drew's new book receives the same treatment. If you enjoyed it, and would like the same, please Google the elite dangerous forums for a thread asking for an audio book of his new book. And please post there in support, we need as many people as possible to show interest.

A good listen for any fan of Elite.

It wasn't the most engaging of stories and I felt like the narrative went back and forth somewhat, whilst the goal remained rather unclear and overly concealed at times. The characters were also rather uninspiring at times and felt quite unoriginal. However there was obviously a lot of intelligent thought put into each one of them.

The major good point of this story was it's performance. It was physically very enjoyable to listen to, and the voice acting was varied and convicing, and the tempo and intonation was just right. All the signs of a good voice actor. The story was also very faithful to the lore of the games and did not feel out of place at all. The writer had definitely done his homework.

Good but has issues

While the overall story is good and enjoyable, by the end it had become very predictable and certain events that occurred felt like they shouldn't have happened (I was rolling my eyes an awful lot).
The majority of the characters were highly unlikeable and I found the main character utterly horrible. Luckily this didn't detract from the story as I'm guessing it was intentional.
The narration was impeccable as is to be expected from Toby Longworth.

A worthy addition to the Elite Dangerous universe

I'm perhaps more predisposed than most to enjoy this story, as a huge fan of the original 1984 Elite computer game, its sequels and then the more recent Elite Dangerous reboot which this is licensed from. But you don't need to have any familiarity with the game to appreciate it - Drew Wagar's writing is more than capable of standing on its own merits.

He succeeds in fleshing out the somewhat spartan background provided by the game with believable and relatable characters, and breathing life into the clash between the game's Empire and Federation superpowers. The space battles are well-written and will resonate with anyone who has played the game.

Toby Longworth did a brilliant job of narrating the audiobook version, with a variety of different voices so it's always easy to tell which character is speaking.

I do hope the sequel finds its way into audiobook form.

This is my first audio book and I'm so impressed. It's based on my favourite computer game so I may be biased.

Couldn't stop listening!

This was my first book and will not be the last.

I am interested in the Elite Universe and that is what got me started. But it was the emotional connection with the victims and unwitting hero's that had me hooked.

The story was a Rolla coaster and the narration brought addition life to the characters. All involved should be very proud. Drew Wagar's writing style painted amazing pictures that bought the universe to life and filled in gaps that I had not understood.
