Publisher's summary

Pultizer Prize-winner Mirta Ojito offers the intriguing story of her exodus from Cuba. In 1980, 25,000 Cuban immigrants arrived in America, dubbed Marielitos for the port from which they departed. Ojito was 16. This audiobook is both a detailed history of the Mariel boatlift and the touching memoir of an immigrant who struggled to find herself in a new world.

Excellent-Brought me to tears!!!

This book truely gave me a better understanding of what type of people Cubans are and what the Cubans have and still are going thru in Cuba. I came to the USA when I was 6 in 1972 and even though my parents told me of the struggles I didn't quite get it...until now. A must read for all, especially Cuban-Americans.

Excelente descripción de Cuba desde su realidad

Would you consider the audio edition of El Manana to be better than the print version?

What did you like best about this story?

Riveting, truthful,

Being Cuban, listening to this book reinforced what I already knew of the plight of Cubans after Castro’s takeover in 1959.
The author being also the narrator gave the story the emotion and feeling that many Cubans, including my family, felt as they left a country uncertain of ever seeing it again. I only wish this book would have also been done as an audio book in English, I know many people who would want to hear the plight of the Cuban people. Listening to stories such as this one really brings their suffering and desire for freedom to light, especially with the current events happening on the island nation where freedom is still not at the reach of its people. Thank you Mirta Ojito for sharing your family’s experience in such a raw and authentic manner. Great listen!

And that’s the way it was..

Ms Ojito probably doesn’t remember me but we attended the same graduate level courses back in the late 80s in Miami. She owned her identity as a Marielita then and how refreshing to hear she still does today. And how could it be otherwise - a riveting and dramatic chapter in the lives of so many. Listening to her relay her story stirred me. Her recounting of the events surrounding the Peruvian embassy carried the zeitgeist that those days had - charged with tension, anticipation and a sense that something historical was indeed occurring. I would love to see someone with Ms Ojito’s journalistic talents tackle an incident like the sinking of the tugboat “13 de Marzo” or even the singular story, mostly forgotten, of Capitán Tondique also known as Mario Lanza Flores - an Afro Cuban farmer and inspiration.
