Publisher's Summary

What if your ex-husband was an abusive, dirty cop, and he was convinced he would get you back someday? What if he was willing to do anything to make that happen? Do you think it would scare off your new boyfriend, a strong, hot firefighter? Not if he has secrets of his own....

Edge of the Heat follows four couples on their journey from disaster to happily ever after.

Following a near death experience, firefighter paramedic Emma Hill's world is turned upside down. Haunted by a vision of the man who could very well be her soul mate, Emma is desperate to find him, but fear stands in her way. With a maniacal ex-husband determined to get her back, Emma struggles to stay clear of him or risk living a life riddled by quiet desperation and abuse. Fighting with a dirty cop is dangerous enough, but when that dirty cop is her ex-husband, the stakes are raised to disastrous levels.

Craig Masterson, the firefighter who saved Emma's life, finds himself falling for her. When he learns who her ex-husband is, he realizes that this is a battle he may not win. Choosing to love her is a deadly game. If he can stay alive, their love may flourish, but only if he can defeat her ex.

Preposterous but entertaining

Well... I have to agree with other reviewers that the story has ridiculous plot twists, unbelievable coincidences, eye-rolling narration and frustrating character inconsistencies.

But... somehow it all comes out entertaining (if you can give the author a very long leash). The characters are funny and dramatic. The writing is extremely over the top but the ideas kept me interested. It's a bit like an OTT Bond film.

It's good to have these books in a series, because each one has a silly cliffhanger.

The narration is okay.

Plot holes and use of, "as God as my witness" 🙄

I tried. I really did. Spoiler warning ahead: I could get past the eye-roll-summoning heroine basing her romantic path on a vision with her track record of one vision coming true in her past. Sort of. The person tailing her would obviously know it was the firefighter who swept her house and killed the bugs while he watched, though they supposedly didn't put that together, despite being the ring leaders of some underground dirty cop et al ring? Why would an FBI agent kill the bugs if he was trying to maintain his cover as a firefighter? I don't buy it. Where it really jumped the shark was the, "as god as my witness" declaration and the invitation to move in, though they hadn't even slept together? Oh, also ending on a super obnoxious cliffhanger. Definitely do not waste a credit on this one. That is, unless your eye rolling muscles need a solid workout.

**update**

Some of the plot holes are resolved in the second book, which makes it more tolerable, and has me continuing to listen to the series just because I've already started it.

Some other reviewers have commented on the narrator's tendency to take gasping breaths frequently, and I find that doesn't bother me as much as her ditzy baby doll voice she puts on. I imagine most of her female voices as some wide-eyed ninnies, grasping at their pearls, and seeking out their smelling salts. Or maybe I imagine her reading to toddlers. She would be so much better suited to read small children's books. I wonder if I would like the series better if they had a better fit for the narrator.

Edge of Heat

I love Lisa Ladew everything I have read of hers and I so much wanted to read this series but I couldn’t past the narrative part. With every sentence she would inhale so loud I cannot get through first chapter. It was so disruptive. I wanted another reader or I should say narrated by someone else but there was no choice

Great writing

Superb from beginning to end. The writing and storyline were phenomenal. The narration could have been better. The in and out fluctuations of the male parts were annoying. Sometimes they sounded like butch women and other times like cheerleaders.

What an amazing set romantic mysteries.

My first books by Ms. Ladew, and I almost stopped. I thought Bk 1 had such a horrible beginning that I almost stopped, thank goodness I didn’t. This author has such an amazing talent with words. These were some of the best thrillers I’ve read & the sex was super hot. Great characters with totally different storylines. You don’t want to miss these.

Bad sex award

This book was awful in every way imaginable. The stories were rubbish, the characters were unbelievable and the women all beautiful and the men all hunky and well endowed. Don’t waste your time or money on this one. I really don’t know how it got published at all.
