Publisher's Summary

From the bestselling author of Checking Out and Dry Hard comes a hilarious story about losing the love of your life, and finding yourself in the aftermath.

When Ollie Sweet is very publicly dumped by ‘The One’, his seemingly perfect world dissolves into misery, self-pity, and a bizarre rooftop meeting with a suicidal man in flip-flops. While most would seek out the support of loved ones at such a torrid time, natural-born journalist Ollie asks the subscribers of his website: how did they get over their failed relationships?

When Ollie follows some of their more extreme advice, chaos inevitably ensues, including accidentally exposing himself to some unsuspecting wildlife, jumping out of a perfectly serviceable aeroplane, and suffering from an extremely painful bottom, courtesy of a maniacal Scotsman.

Of course, all of this goes down a storm with his online following, and Ollie soon finds himself the centre of everyone’s attention - whether he likes it or not!

With his eclectic collection of supporters to guide him, can Ollie mend his broken heart, heal his broken bottom, and learn to find happiness again?

literally laugh out loud funny

the book itself is hilarious, of course. the stories, the situations Ollie finds himself in, but the real hero of this audio book is the narrator. he's bloody brilliant (to steal a Britishism)! The character voices are perfect, and the delivery adds so much to the comedy. many occasions I found myself in tears laughing. well worth the listen or read!

Definite laughs!

This wasn't non-stop laughter but there was some definite laugh out loud moments and a few smirks!

Whether the dumper or the dumpee, we can identify with the main character, Ollie/Oliver. He has a bit of a fantastical view of life and relationships so this book is sorta his journey of self-discovery. It was really well-written and well-narrated. Nick Spalding just has a way of creating real characters and finding the humor in the ordinary. The narrator was the perfect complement to that effort. Just an all-around great listen!

Lol

I wasn’t sure about this book during the first couple of chapters, and then I was. A great, fun, lighthearted, read. Very relatable.

The male version of Bridget Jones

I love Bridget Jones - I can relate to her internal dialogue on so many levels. This book felt the same to me - I think if I were a man, this might be me. As a woman, there were a few places that took me out of the story, but only because, like I said, I'm not a man. But that did not take away from the overall enjoyment of the writing. Nick Spalding does socially awkward normal people so well!

This is a bit of a raucous and wild ride and, like Bridget Jones' Diary, it's not for the sensitive reader. There are some rather racy bits, but written in a way that makes the situations so relatable.

Sex - Some, but almost always with some kind of awkward laugh-out-loud mishap involved (Bambi - hahahaha!)
Language - Some, but addressed in much the same way as the sex
Violence - Only the kind that happens to socially awkward normal people.

I will say that I space my Nick Spalding books out - they make me laugh, but I can only handle so much of his style in one sitting. I'm a fast listener - I typically listen to 3 or more audiobooks a week - but I rarely listen to more than one of his in a month. It would be like having sticky, nutty pecan pie for every meal instead of just at Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Narration - Steve West handled Ollie Sweet's character with great skill! I totally believed he was telling his own story. May make it hard to look him in the eye if we ever meet face to face one day, but nicely done, Steve!

This deserves 10 stars

This book is phenomenal. The writing is fantastic and i felt like i had a front row seat to a movie about Ollie's life!
The narrator is perfection and elevates the creative writing into something that cannot be explained by words.
This book deserves more than 5 stars!

Quite a journey

This book is a must-listen. It’s so good that I wish I could listen to it for the first time again. I savored every chapter, laughing until I cried more times than I can remember. It’s my first Nick Spalding book and I’m definitely checking out more of his work.

Steve West hits it out of the park in this performance. He vividly brings Ollie to life so well, if they make this into a film (they absolutely should) then Steve has to play Ollie. Some Audies better be coming his way for his work in this as he is superb.

Had me laughing so hard I was crying (ch. 4)!!!

Obviously I selected this book “Title” to deal with my own issues....
I loved every minute of your book! Thank you for writing it and helping those of us who’ve selected to read it. 🙂❤️

Any slower it would be going backwards.

I had to give up. Slow? Dear goodness. Why use 10 words to describe a situation when you can use 1000. Describing an oom pah band song for over 3 minutes was it for me.
I would strongly suggest you don't bother.

Terrible unless you are a 14 year old boy,

This book was such a disappointment. Is it for adults? I gave up when he was masturbating in his tent.

A great introduction to audiobook

This being the 1st ecer audiobook l ever listened to, l now see why all the interest!
That said, l really enjoyed the story, the concept, but especially, the narration.
Fun, self-depricating, absurd at times, light, and just a good excuse to have a little chuckle with tourself. Ecen if the rest of the world looks at you worryingly while doing so.

A bit predictable but ok

Story was a bit predictable and I didn’t really get to love the lead character.

Generally an easy listen though and seeing it through to the end wasn’t a struggle. 😀

couldn't put it down

I was so gripped by this book i found it hard to put it down. I couldn't wait to hear wait to hear what antics Mr Sweet was going to be doing next. Slightly predictable ending but enjoyable all the same.

Needy bloke grows a pair

This book starts off promisingly and although it was very funny in parts I was disappointed with it overall. I can't decide whether the main character, Olly, was more annoying when he was a timid girlfriend-pleaser who fell in love at the drop of a hat or when he became more "manly" and assertive. The author seems determined to make the reader understand what is, in effect, a simple plot, by using as many adjectives as possibly to explain the feelings of our hero at any given time. As a grammar pedant I was somewhat irritated by his use of "sat" instead of "sitting" (no-one picked you up and put you there!) but that's probably just me. The performance was good but the story was not totally credible.

My first read by Nick Spalding. Awesome book, couldn’t put it down (well, stop listening, audible)
