Publisher's summary

Cherry Walker was a devoted, trusting, uncommonly innocent young woman who loved caring for a neighbor's little boy. But when she was asked to testify in court against his abusive mother, Cherry never got the chance. She couldn't lie if her life depended on it - and it did. Cherry's body was found on the side of a Texas road, after being doused with lighter fluid and set aflame.

Attractive, manipulative, and violent, mother of four Kim Cargill had a wealth of dirty secrets she'd do anything to keep hidden. This in-depth account by best-selling investigative journalist M. William Phelps takes you inside Cargill's shocking trial and into the mind of one of the most conniving female psychopaths in recent history.

Some narration issues

Overall, the book was okay. More drawn out and repetitive than neccesary to tell the story. The narrator has an annoying technique for letting the listener know it's quoted material; he makes his voice go higher, It works to alert the listener to the fact that it's a quote, but it became so annoying to me, I was cringing, dreading the next quote. Beyond that -- and maybe this was just annoying to me, personally -- he is a good narrator. Book was okay.

Poor performance

I’m really hoping Me. Yen hasn’t been narrating audio books for a long time. His performance almost made me stop listening. The way he would pause and then put such inflection on a quote, almost made this True Crime story comical. Example, Cherry said (long pause) “I DON’T want to go eat”. He does this all throughout the entire book. It’s terrible.

One of M William Phillips best true crime books!

Phillips was able to piece together a complicated story about an enduring innocent victim whose life was snuffed out by one of the most evil, vile, scariest, manipulative, violent female psychopaths I’ve read about since Jodi Arias. I’ll never forget the victim Cherry Walker. RIP sweet lady.

satisfying ending for sure

Tough to hear this story kit the ending made it OK. Rarely have I been so eager to see justice served with a criminal. Unbelievable evil.

another great true crime book by Phelps!

another great story told by the great M William Phelps! I love most of his books and I'm leaving this review after my 2nd read. I picked this one up a couple years ago, and thoroughly enjoyed reading it again in 2019. Thanks Mr. Phelps!

Interesting & sad story

A bit redundant about he many related instances of abuse & sociopathic behavior. Not enough explanation of how it all went on for so long without that woman’s children being taken from her. Very sad it went on so long that a sweet girl ended up murdered. I hope the death penalty is finally executed in the end for this miserable & dangerous woman.

Sad Story

This case happened close to where I live but I didn’t know about it until years later. What happened to Cherry (and the children) was horrible and Kim is truly a psychopath. The story is extremely sad and just plain unbelievable.
The story is easy to follow and the narration is clear. Would highly recommend.

Decades Long Crime Spree of a Serial Abuser

The fascinating story of a dangerous woman and her trail of victims including her children. The trail of abuse and her methods of torturing her victims are ruthless. The crimes she escaped responsibility for over the years boggle the mind. Even worse, she was a nurse. She hid under the banner of a "caregiver". Great writing and narration. Remarkable telling of events. I couldn't put the book down.
