Publisher's summary

In Detox Your Thoughts, popular psychologist Andrea Bonior, PhD, identifies the 12 most prevalent thought patterns that make people feel anxious, insecure, and generally just bad.

To overcome the most common mental traps, you must completely change the way you relate to your thoughts.

If breaking free of negative thought patterns could be cured through simply thinking positively or doubling down on our self-care, we wouldn't see such epidemic rates of depression and anxiety disorders worldwide. Bonior deciphers the psychological research to help us disempower our self-sabotaging thoughts, and teaches specific and actionable ways to overcome them in a transformational listen.

  • Dr. Andrea Bonior is a popular psychologist and contributor to BuzzFeed and the Washington Post.
  • Inspired by her popular BuzzFeed challenge Detox Your Thoughts, Bonior identifies 12 mental traps that keep us locked in negative thinking.
  • The book explores a surprising path to break free of these harmful thoughts.

With bite-sized pop psychology takes on the thought patterns that plague most people and a practical approach to quitting negative self-talk for good, Detox Your Thoughts is a transformational read.

Dr. Bonior's mental health advice column, "Baggage Check", has appeared for 14 years in the Washington Post and several other newspapers nationwide.

  • Perfect for readers of the Washington Post's "Baggage Check" column, Goodful's Detox Your Thoughts, Psychology Today, and The Cut's "Science of Us".
  • Also a good fit for those who love pop psychology, self-help books, and any books related to motivation or happiness.
  • Fans of Anxious for Nothing: Finding Calm in a Chaotic World by Max Lucado, 13 Things Mentally Strong People Don't Do by Amy Morin, and Dare: The New Way to End Anxiety and Stop Panic Attacks by Barry McDonagh will want this in their collection.

Not worth the time

I have listened to a lot of self improvement books - this was one of the worst I have heard. It provides a very light touch over probably hundreds of negative thought patterns - by 'very light touch' I mean it describes a negative thought pattern, gives an example, but does not provide steps or advice for addressing negative thought patterns and replacing them. I imagine the benefit is that once you identify with one or more of the negative thought patterns you will realize you are reinforcing a negative behavior and stop yourself. Maybe that is the point and that is enough - just to be aware of your negative thoughts so you can help yourself without specific steps or growth advice. Hearing hundreds of negative thoughts with the advice of 'don't do that' was not useful for me.

Nuggets to explore

Author is direct & offers some good nuggets to explore & re-direct negativity in your thought process. Down to earth without a lot of psycho babble. Wish I had heard this when I was in my 20’s. A good listen but 40 years later nit many “ah-ha’s” for me. Share this with a younger person & help them toward more self-acceptance!

A must read for everyone, especially

The author’s voice isn’t quite as polished as other audiobooks, but she’s speaking from the heart & you can tell. I will listen to this again & again. I already started it over & am actually taking notes this time.

Geared For the Excellent

I almost scrapped this book because . I already "know" it all . I was looking for something new & different.
OK, so I listened.
As someone pushing eighty, been around the block and back. again, and again. I realized why my life was less than wonderful , for the most part, as I "knew" it could be. well, just read it, or listen (even better), as though you know nothing... Come, with holy empty hands, unto your God. as the human doing you are.

How to make thoughts less sticky

The title made me a little worried that I would create a negative association with certain thoughts by labeling them as “toxic”. To my pleasant surprise, Bonior takes a n approach that acknowledges any thoughts and confronts them in a way where you are in control and the thoughts aren’t. Two chapters that really stuck out to me were Approval vs Connection, and the Myth of Arrival. I noticed a typo in the audible chapter title where the chapter says the Myth of A Rival which confused me until I actually listened to the chapter and realized it should have been the Myth of “Arrival”.

Overall, great book. I will have to relisten to a few chapters again. Will recommend this book to others.

The hype is real

I read a lot of self-help and psychology books. It’s like half of my library. This has to be in the top five maybe top three. It is an excellent summary of the most valuable therapy points and techniques. Frankly, it’s probably the best starting point for anyone on a self help journey.
