Publisher's Summary

"The terror is relentless" (Publishers Weekly) in Stephen King's number-one national best seller about a little mining town, Desperation, that many will enter on their way to somewhere else. But getting out is not easy as it would seem....

Located off a desolate stretch of Interstate 50, Desperation, Nevada, has few connections with the rest of the world. It is a place, though, where the seams between worlds are thin. And it is a place where several travelers are abducted by Collie Entragian, the maniacal police officer of Desperation. Entragian uses various ploys for the abductions, from an arrest for drug possession to "rescuing" a family from a nonexistent gunman. There's something very wrong here, all right, and Entragian is only the surface of it.

The secrets embedded in Desperation's landscape and the evil that infects the town like some viral hot zone are both awesome and terrifying. But as one of the travelers, young David Carver, seems to know - though it scares him nearly to death to realize it - so are the forces summoned to combat them.

Critic Reviews

"Stephen King's knack for turning the stray junk of pop culture into sick, darkly engrossing thrills has rarely been this much in evidence as in Desperation." ( Salon)

Once again unabridged

I love unabridged books, and I am so glad Desperation is an unabridged option. I like this story better than The Regulators. I actually like to hear Steven King tell his own stories. He is not a professional reader, but his books "sound like him". Please don't ask me to explain, some of you may actually understand anyway. He is one of the original "kill off the good guy" writers, and that keeps me interested.

Another Dimension

If you like Kings more occult/metaphysical stories with evil entities like "It" or "Dreamcatcher" this is one of those, but a bit shorter. This one is got some very graphic horror and violence. I liked it a lot, well worth the money OR the credit!

Finally!

I've been waiting for this to be available as an unabridged audiobook for years! And read by the author just makes it even better! Listened to it over two days and was not disappointed.

Constant reader

I almost never write these things even tho I always look at what others are saying about whatever it is that I'm interested in buying. Especially digital books. This one knocked my socks off. I have read a lot of Stephen King books. The dark tower series will always and forever be my favorite from SK's treasure trove of literary accomplishments (except the ending! I was actually pretty pissed off but I won't say anything just in case you haven't had the pleasure of reading yet). So much so that it now takes me forever to find one that I haven't read or more recently haven't listened to. I'm fairly new to audible novels and have listened to 3 Stephen King books so far. I was a little leery when I saw that the author would be reading this. I'm not sure why. Especially now after finishing it. He created these characters and this amazingly terrifying story. Listening to Stephen King read it the way his mind saw it when he captured this story was extraordinary! I've seen this story a bunch of times whenever I've gone looking for another SK novel. But for some reason or another it never grasped my attention. I still had doubts when I bought it. Even after looking thru title after title of his novels that I've either read already or listened to. WTF was wrong with me? I should've read this story a long time ago. I am glad that I didn't read it already and was able to experience it this way. I was blown away. My heart was pounding the whole time and I'm pretty sure I actually jumped and/or screamed while listening in my car alone.

Reminiscent of It

There were a number of things about this story that reminded me of It and all in an fascinating way. There are a number of gruesome scenes so beware. It deals heavily in the supernatural and divine. King was also a wonderful narrator.

Desperation a video

I don't think there are many authors who can Create a Video in One's mind. But Stephen King has got to be one of the best.
I also enjoy the way he pits good against evil.
where good wins the battle, but the war isn't over. I like going underneath the story, where the war is still going on.

SO glad to finally hear the full and unabridged story.

Spoiler Alert
Ok I always feel like I need to add that just in case.
Best quote ever"...sometimes he makes you live."
Stephen King steals my heart again.

Outstanding!

I can clearly see this book made into a movie. It kept my attention through the end, and I was disappointed when it was over. I felt I could easily connect with the characters, and often felt I was accompanying them on their horrible journey. Great book!!

Although the author was also the narrator of the book, and I tend to like him, it would make the book even more gripping to have a narrator who will include the dramatic emphases into his or her dialogue.

A return to dark forces after The Mercedes sagas

I like all of the King's books, although I love some. I wasn't in love with Desperation.
Let's face it, he's a better writer than reader. What happened to Patton?
A lot of familiar King themes including a child shall lead them, but a recovering alcoholic will save them. Cack
