Publisher's Summary

Deliberate Discomfort follows the journey of Jason Van Camp as a new Green Beret commander taking over a team of combat-hardened Special Forces veterans. This true story tells firsthand the intense, traumatic battles these warriors fought and won, sharing lessons learned from their incredible backgrounds.

A cadre of scientists further break down each experience, translating them into digestible and relatable action items, allowing the listener to apply these lessons forged under fire to their own lives. Deliberate Discomfort is the ultimate book on leadership and self-improvement, depicting how these warriors found a way to win under incredible odds with never-quit attitudes.

The authors don't just tell you how to thrive under pressure; they show you how, in heart-racing, first-person narratives. The lessons transcend business, sports, and all other organizational and personal dynamics. Listen to Medal of Honor recipient Leroy Petry's true account of grabbing an enemy grenade in Afghanistan, saving the lives of his fellow soldiers, but losing his hand in the process. Hear what fellow Medal of Honor recipient Florent Groberg was thinking as he tackled a suicide bomber. Feel what Marine Joey Jones felt as he was flying through the air, weightless, after stepping on the IED that would take both his legs. And most importantly, experience what Jason learned about leadership and embracing discomfort from adversity.

cheese book

garbage book, if I,could go back in time I never would have wasted the money... he's just regurgitating other authors, military buzzwords and sayings... selling out on his experience for a buck.

Horribly Boring

I couldn't get through this without falling asleep. Ridiculously cheesy and the narration is as exciting as a snail race.

A good story, but misses the mark

Really interesting story that details the author’s impressive successes throughout his military career, and how he used his experiences to improve himself mentally, physically and in other ways. But, I find this more to be an interesting story than a book on how to apply this to yourself (unless of course you’re also a navy seal+green beret+army ranger). Ton of respect for the author/veteran, but I didn’t feel this was easy to apply to someone not in his shoes.

Immediately practical, remarkably well done.

This book was written for the reader and this reader looks forward to rereading. The author and collaborators weave together inspiring stories to lay out principles, and the make the science behind the principles easy to understand. The diversity of the stories is also remarkable. I can't think of a better book on the subjects of performance, leadership, mindset and personal growth.

The best book I have ever purchased

Just finished this book, I’m about to start it over again and buy two more for my company leadership. Well written, well spoken, well put together, and overall a great book. I learned a lot, it reinforced a lot, and it inspired me. I couldn’t get enough, all I wanted to do was listen.

Give it a couple chapters

I found this book a little bit slow to get into and initially it was not what I had hoped for but I soon found it to be a riveting listen as they got into the individual stories. The way they went at presenting the material was extremely effective and I found the stories original and extremely interesting. Good message that is different from lots of military books as it focused on listening, being vulnerable, surrendering the ego, and seeking out discomfort as the title states. I highly recommend this book.
