Publisher's Summary

In this white-knuckled, timely, and whip-smart debut thriller, a deadly plot against the president’s life emerges from the shadows of the deep state.

Trust no one.

Recently elected President Richard Monroe - populist, controversial, and divisive - is at the center of an increasingly polarized Washington, DC. Never has the partisan drama been so tense or the paranoia so rampant. In the midst of contentious political turf wars, the White House chief of staff is found dead in his house. A tenacious intern discovers a single, ominous clue that suggests he died from something other than natural causes, and there may be a wide-ranging conspiracy running beneath the surface of everyday events: powerful government figures are scheming to undermine the rule of law - and democracy itself.

Soon, allies are exposed as enemies, once-dependable authorities will fall under suspicion, and no one seems to be who they say they are. The unthinkable is happening. The Deep State is real. Who will die to keep its secrets? Who will kill to uncover the truth?

An amazing thriller

Well done for the first thriller I'd heard from both author and narrator. Would highly recommend it to fans of political thrillers. 10/10.

Enjoyable but disappointing

I was looking forward to this book very much, with all the hype by book reviewers etc . The beginning was very slow, and I kept on telling myself to just listen 10 more minutes, something should happen. It eventually did. The idea of the story was great, but it just seem to be lacking most of the times. I don't know if it is because I have read similar stories to often or what?
The narrator was VERY BAD! Listening on normal speed, sounded as if she was falling asleep, I listened at 2 x speed to get through it.
Not a great debut in my opinion

Scary political thriller right on point

Very good political thriller with lots of twists and turns. Throughly modern and makes one think. Highly recommended.

Disappointing ...

Even though the book’s beginning was a bit slow, it picked up speed and was doing well, until, that is, the final plot ‘twist’. While many of the characters and ideas in this work of fiction are quite thinly disguised real life people and trends, the final twist (which was quite unnecessary) is a piece of gratuitous partisan propaganda that ruins it for the reader ...
