Publisher's summary

“Heart-stopping intensity.” —San Francisco Chronicle

“Meltzer has come up with a gem of a plot….It breezes along in high gear….[A] highly recommended suspenser.” —Chicago Tribune

In this second novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Brad Meltzer, husband and wife face off in a legal thriller that poses the most chilling question of all: How far would you go to save the one you love?

Sara Tate, a Manhattan assistant DA, is on the brink of losing her job. But then she takes a case that may be able to secure her future. Trouble is, it’s much more complicated—and deadly—than it initially appears. While forces within her own office plot against her, an outside threat takes things to another level: Win the case or her attorney husband, Jared, will die. But Jared has received threats, too. Forced to defend the opposition, he learns that, if loses the case, Sara will be killed. With everything on the line for both of them, husband and wife battle it out—at court and at home—while maintaining the terrible secret behind their motives. Caught in a struggle of rollercoaster emotions and shocking betrayals, Jared and Sara must face the unthinkable: No matter who wins, one of them may die.

Great story. Lots of turns to it. I loved the book.

Scott was wonderful. He really bring a story a live
to a reader. Hard to second guess the ending.

what is with the music?

I really enjoyed this book however, the music was distracting and not needed. I hope that maybe they will remove it for future listeners.

I feel like I went on a walk in the woods, and got poison ivy!

I wish I had never heard of this book, let alone listened to it. The early chapters sucker you in like a time share salesman, but midway in you want it to be over with, but there are so many twists and turns it’s hard to even fast forward. The ending doesn’t bring that much relief and annoys you more. again, I wish I had never heard of this book let alone listened to it. if you love to be miserable, then this book is for you.

Lots of twists

This was a good story with lots of twists. The narrator is not my favorite. It takes me a while to get used to him but the story drew me in and it was hard to stop listening.

Needs a lot of editing

For me, the book was way too long and drawn out. It would have been much more exciting if it was a few hours shorter.

another day another book

same old, same old.
one totally irritating factor was gratuitous music suddenly appearing for no benefit to the story and loud enough that you couldn't hear the words.

Always edge of your seat, definite bldg of character mistrust which the reader truly begins to take on as well

Wife came off a bit too whiney although it would seem she was supposed to only appear insecure. Reader begins to dislike her more than feel compassion for her

Lawyer fiction is a favorite

Okay, this was a decent book. The plot was interesting, albeit a little predictable, there were some unexpected twists. Most of the characters were developed well, but……. The female protagonist Sara was very unlikeable…. actually she was downright annoying. She was written as a self absorbed, egotistical, competitive woman. And I’m being nice. I found myself yelling out loud because she was so annoying. I don’t like to criticize women because I am one but wow, she really sucked!!!

Not my favorite Meltzer…

I finished The Tenth Justice and was excited to start Dead Even. Unsure as to why this book didn’t work for me. Scott Brick was amazing as always but I felt bogged down by the characters - difficult to keep all of them straight.
