Publisher's Summary

“Heart-stopping intensity.” —San Francisco Chronicle

“Meltzer has come up with a gem of a plot….It breezes along in high gear….[A] highly recommended suspenser.” —Chicago Tribune

In this second novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Brad Meltzer, husband and wife face off in a legal thriller that poses the most chilling question of all: How far would you go to save the one you love?

Sara Tate, a Manhattan assistant DA, is on the brink of losing her job. But then she takes a case that may be able to secure her future. Trouble is, it’s much more complicated—and deadly—than it initially appears. While forces within her own office plot against her, an outside threat takes things to another level: Win the case or her attorney husband, Jared, will die. But Jared has received threats, too. Forced to defend the opposition, he learns that, if loses the case, Sara will be killed. With everything on the line for both of them, husband and wife battle it out—at court and at home—while maintaining the terrible secret behind their motives. Caught in a struggle of rollercoaster emotions and shocking betrayals, Jared and Sara must face the unthinkable: No matter who wins, one of them may die.

Audibile is re-releasing old Meltzer novels

I listen to a lot of audiobooks- I mean A LOT. I can't always keep up with what I have listened to. Audible is rereleasing Meltzer novels and this is my second to have to return because I get about 20 minutes in and realize I have heard it before. I even own the older versions (read by Scott Brick too) and it doesn't tell me that I've already listen to them. I enjoy Meltzer and like his formula, but Audible should be better than this.

Was released prior to the date shown.

Looked forward to hearing this book. 1/4 way through realized this was a book released years ago. Hate when this happens. Book was awesome no issues other than release date misleading.

Great story. Lots of turns to it. I loved the book.

Scott was wonderful. He really bring a story a live
to a reader. Hard to second guess the ending.

Slow moving

Not a bad selection. Just too much filler text and a plot that is way too slow in development. Narration is very good. Suggest you get this one on a BOGO special only.

A true page turner!

Loved this storyline and the narrator’s voice. Only mild annoyance was the music at the end and beginning of each chapter. Totally unnecessary.
But it’s a fabulous listen!

Not my favorite Meltzer…

I finished The Tenth Justice and was excited to start Dead Even. Unsure as to why this book didn’t work for me. Scott Brick was amazing as always but I felt bogged down by the characters - difficult to keep all of them straight.

Awful

I’ve read several of Meltzer’s books so this was sooo disappointing. What a ridiculous storyline and paperthin characters. Skip it!

Kill “Jared”

What happened, Brad? This plot and character (Jared) is so unrealistic and incredulous. Can a man (any place and anywhere and at anytime) be so weak, feeble, unaware, constantly caught off guard, brutalized, and indecisive?! Does he have an ounce of testosterone or fight in him? He’s so pathetic as a character that I can scarcely finish the novel. What man (in love or not) can remotely begin to relate to such weakness? He’s a snowflake X10. Mercy! (Soooo unlike your other novels!) The more I listened, the more I thought of this: “Nothing in his life / Became him like the leaving it.”

“Jared” is insufferable. Kill him off. This one goes nowhere. The plot… really? For every decision by the two main characters, my mind reeled with 10 other options. I just don’t get such feeble-minded characters.

Egad! Take paper and pen anew… “Next.”

Nice read

Good twist and turns. Slow at some points.
Always enjoy listening to Scott Brick. He was great as usual.
