Publisher's summary

Dr. PJ Miller's story is unique. Growing up in New York City, who would have thought that he'd complete his veterinary degree at the Royal School of Veterinary Studies in Edinburgh, Scotland? In Cute Poodles, Sweet Old Ladies & Hugs, Dr. Miller has assembled a "greatest hits" of veterinary tales - stories that include colorful clients, wisecracking hospital staff, and pets that aren't always friendly.

Cute Poodles, Sweet Old Ladies & Hugs provides a humorous look at what Dr. Miller went through to become a veterinarian and his daily life as a doctor, told only as a typical New Yorker could. Underneath the humor, Dr. Miller gives a glimpse of how strong and emotional the human-animal bond can be, becoming an instant must-listen for any aspiring veterinary professional or animal lover that wants to know what it is really like to be a veterinarian.

Fun, funny, light

Nothing amazing or earthshattering, just pleasant recollections of odd pet disorders and odder pet owners.

Loved it!

We have a lot of pets and are very familiar with visits to the vet. I loved this book. Made me laugh, and I learned a lot. Most of all I will be a very good client for my vet after listening to this book. A+

sweet stories from a vet

This is a great book to pick up when you only have a little time to read, each chapter is a story about a single case. It is a James Harriet type of book with families and the love for their pets.

Interesting

This book was nice and fun to listen to. It explains the small nuances of veterinary medicine that people may not consider when deciding to become a vet. I learned a lot and enjoyed the stories.

Great book, a must listen to/read

I wanna start off by saying I’ll never leave a review. But I had to for this book it was exceptional.

When I saw this book and read the summary, it drew my attention because I have a daughter who graduated veterinary school last year. Listening to the stories was wonderful. It gave me great insight into some of the things that my daughter experiences as I’ve heard a couple of different interesting stories that could probably go in this book. I think all pet owners should read this book just to get a taste of what stress veterinarians are under and see some of the humor. I hope Dr. Miller put out a volume to because I will happily listen to that too.

Funny

I really liked his expressions or interpretations of his clients. BUT I could tell how much he didn't like little old ladies.

Fun description of the life of a vet

Well written and fun. As a veterinarian, the tales of Mrs Sweet and Sour, school and conferences hit home.

The science was good, the view of people tho...

I liked learning about the medical parts of the job, process of problem solving, but eventually had to stop listening. I started getting distracted by the representation of the other people in the book, which was taking away from the quality story and science. About half way in I started noticing that all the women were described by their physical characteristics as much as their personality. The men were not described this way. At first I thought it was just me, but then my boyfriend noticed it too after listening to it for just a little bit, overhearing it in the next room and was bothered. I also did not like the characterizing of the LGBTQAI community. No matter how good the story was, eventually we had to stop because of the dismissive nature of other people.

It's too bad because the story is good, but the lack of respect / dismissive views of most of the other people became so overwhelming, that I just had to stop. Which made me sad because the experience is well described, it was informing and entertaining.

I still think it's a good book, and if those sorts of things don't bother you, it will be a fine listen. Much of me wants to complete the book, and this really is a MINOR element, I feel silly even talking about it, but as a woman who is in science, it was something I couldn't continue with.
