To honor the twentieth anniversary of beloved comedienne Gilda Radner’s death from ovarian cancer comes a commemorative edition of her memoir, It’s Always Something—featuring an updated resource guide for people living with cancer and a tribute by Radner’s former colleagues at Saturday Night Live.

As a cast member on the original Saturday Night Live, Gilda Radner created a compelling character named “Roseann Rosannadanna” who habitually ended her routine with the line, “It’s always something,” which was her father’s favorite expression about life. Radner chose the catch- phrase she made famous as the title to her brave, funny, and painfully honest memoir: the story of her struggle against cancer and her determination to continue laughing.

Gilda’s Club, a network of affiliate clubhouses that seeks to provide a social and emotional support community to people living with cancer, was founded in Radner’s memory in 1991. The name of the organization comes from a remark Gilda once made, that cancer gave her “membership to an elite club I’d rather not belong to.” In partnership with Gilda’s Club, It’s Always Something includes valuable information for all whose lives have been touched by cancer and reminds us of the important place laughter has in healing.

Told as only Gilda Radner could tell it, It’s Always Something is the inspiring story of a courageous, funny woman fighting to enjoy life no matter what the circumstances. She died in 1989. Gilda’s Club is distinguished by its unique philosophy and program, “cancer support for the whole family, the whole time.” Learn more about Gilda’s Club at GildasClub.org.©1989 Gilda Radner, All Rights Reserved; (P)1989 Simon & Schuster Inc., All Rights Reserved; AUDIOWORKS Is an Imprint of Simon & Schuster Audio Division, Simon & Schuster Inc.

I don’t usually write reviews, so I felt strongly enough about this honest, sweet inspiring memoir to do just that. High recommend.

It always feels weird to rate an autobiography, as if I’m rating the author’s story. That said, I did have expectations on what I’d learn about Radner in her own words. These expectations were not met.

Admittedly, I wanted to hear more about her childhood, working towards Saturday Night Live, her attempt at the big screen - her WHOLE story. However, it really was focused on the last 6 years of her life. Of course, I am grateful to hear even a lick of her story told in her own words. I simply wish there was more of it.

This on its own was at times a difficult read. There was a lot of bouncing around in events and I believe the story was suppose to be constantly comparing her “past” (no cancer) self to her “present” self. Although this was at times successful, most of the time it was difficult to follow.

Overall, I always recommend an autobiography and will always rate it 5/5 since personal stories, even when hard to follow, ought to always be rated as perfect… at least in my opinion.

Not what expected, but still something
