Publisher's Summary

From taking human life to being assigned to the body recovery team of nine brother firefighters, including one of his best friends, US Marine, former police officer and firefighter Travis Howze was plagued with extreme post-traumatic stress, depression, and survivor's guilt from a lifetime of very traumatic exposures dating back to early childhood. Victorious in the fight for his very own life at just three months old, his struggle to survive was just the beginning. Years later, he would defeat the very silent and deadly killer, PTSD, but not before it caused massive carnage and collateral damage to his personal and professional life.

From class clown to professional stand-up comedian and speaker, Travis’ unbelievably gripping, uncensored autobiography is a must-listen that takes you on an emotional roller-coaster ride through the eyes of an emergency responder. Follow Travis through countless horrific events, from funny stories inside of the firehouse, patrol car, and marine corps, to stand-up comedy stages and the dark places first responders have to go to in their mind to survive. This true, hard-hitting story is about staying in the fight. It’s about never quitting, always getting up, doing the things you love, and how the power of perspective, attitude, ownership and acceptance can lead to life-changing personal growth and a more purposeful life.

Such an important story for first responders to hear.

As a 22 year law enforcement officer, I relate so thoroughly with the content of this book. The topics of mental health and first responders don’t overlap nearly as often as they should.

I was fortunate enough to see Travis in person while on tour and his message resonated with so many in the room. This book, and Travis, are an inspiration.

Travis, keep up the good work.

Great Insight into Public Service

Enjoyed the book, I was able to get a better understanding of what happens when you stuff everything down and do not allow yourself to express your feelings and emotions

Not Alone

Great book! A true success story. Addresses many tough issues with a great balance of emotion and humor. Just like life parts of the story are tough, which helps because it reminds us that on the dark times we are not alone.

Could not stop listening

I finished this book in a few days. Listening to Travis’s story made me reflect on my life and the things I’ve had to deal with. It was hard listening to him talk about the Super Store Fire, if you are dealing with PTS or depression it will hit you hard. But I’m the end I have a new outlook on dealing with my PTS and life. I’ve been listening to his podcasts and all I can say is wow, it helps. Thank you Travis. Thank you for sharing your story, continuing to help others and your service.

Brotherhood at its finest

awesome book! I’m a retired firefighter from SC and just listening to Travis talk about the Charleston 9, losing his best friends and how I was able to relate to also losing my best friend. It’s absolutely heartfelt book. One of my favorite books of all times now.

Great Perspective

I’m new to the fire service and don’t necessarily know much about the history of it all. I heard Travis on the Getting Salty Podcast (as I’m trying to take in as much fire service as possible). He’s just a genuine no BS guy that has been subject to a ton of trauma. I never even thought that my 2+ years on duty had any impact on me, but through this book and same his titled Podcast it has opened my eyes to changes I’ve been feeling. Thank you for the perspective, the insight and the motivation to stay on top of the mental health of myself and my crew.
