Acerca de esta escucha

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Karin Slaughter, author of the bestselling Will Trent novels, is widely acclaimed as “one of the best crime novelists in America” (The Washington Post). Now she delivers her first stand-alone novel: an epic story of a city in the midst of seismic upheaval, a serial killer targeting cops, and a divided police force tasked with bringing a madman to justice.

Atlanta, 1974. It’s Kate Murphy’s first day on the job, and the Atlanta Police Department is seething after the murder of an officer. Before the day has barely begun, she already suspects she’s not cut out to be a cop. Her male uniform is too big, she can’t handle a gun, and she’s rapidly learning that the APD is hardly a place that welcomes women. Worse still, in the ensuing manhunt, she’ll be partnered with Maggie Lawson, a cop with her own ax to grind (and a brother and uncle already on the force)—a strategy meant to isolate Kate and Maggie from the action. But the move will backfire, putting them right at the heart of it.

Cop Town is an incredibly atmospheric nail-biter from the author the Huffington Post called an “exemplary storyteller” and “one of the great talents of the twenty-first century.”

Horrific beginning

If I didn’t know what great books Karen Slaughter writes, I wouldn’t have gotten past the beginning. Keep reading; it gets better and better.

great except for narrator

What did you love best about Cop Town?

Female leads! Great perspective on the 1970s and being a woman

What was one of the most memorable moments of Cop Town?

Kate's first day on the job and struggling to work in a uniform that doesn't fit.

What didn’t you like about Kathleen Early’s performance?

Early appears to be so concerned about delivering a performance that won't influence the listener's perceptions of the characters (that picture in our heads) that every line sounds almost the same. She risks nothing and delivers nothing.

Too long

Story started out great, about mid way through it started to drag and become repetitive, felt as if the author was trying to stretch the story to make it longer. Could have been 2 - 3 hours shorter. Enjoyed the epilogue.

Solid

1974. Racism, sexism, anti-Semitism, all ISMs abound in and outside of the Atlanta Police Department. Over the last year, 5 cops have been murdered, including officer Jimmy Lawson's partner. His sister cop Maggie, marginalized in her family and on the force simply for being female, and her rookie partner,Kate, may just prove they're more ardor at finding the killer(s) and uncovering the ugly truths inside the APD.

The overwhelming prejudice/sexism in COP TOWN made reading this novel painful at times, but I'm old enough to remember 1974 and the oppressive attitudes many had against women and minorities. Karin Slaughter, who has the perfect name for a thriller writer, has written another fast paced, enjoyable novel. Unlike some of her novels in the Will Trent series, I found myself needing frequent breathers in COP TOWN due to my discomfort with the prejudice, but this is not a complaint. I'm glad Slaughter didn't minimize or ignore this painful part of history. We shouldn't forget how minorities were treated (and in some cases are still being treated) not just unequally, but also criminally.
If you like fast-paced, crime or mystery novels, recent historical fiction, or books about women triumphing against sexism, COP TOWN is a must read.

I loved this book!!

I wish that Ms. Slaughter had made this into a on-going book series. The characters were well formed and the plot was interesting and entertaining. I'd listen to it again!

GOOD FOR AN AIRPLANE RIDE

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Good cop, bad cop. Not to much left to the story line after you figured that out.

Would you be willing to try another book from Karin Slaughter? Why or why not?

Probably not. I have too many unread books that I hope will have more substance.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Kathleen Early?

Narration was fine.

Was Cop Town worth the listening time?

Not really.

a bit over the top. not too believable. I guess one can conceive the red necks could also. be cops but that says little about the higher ups.
