Publisher's summary

Snow is falling softly as a young woman takes her last breath.

Fifteen miles away, two women sit silently in a dark kitchen. They don't speak, because there is nothing left to be said.

Another woman boards a plane to escape the man who is trying to steal her life. But she will have to return sooner or later.

These strangers have one thing in common. They each made one bad choice - and now they have no choices left. Soon they won't be strangers, they'll be family....

When DCI Tom Douglas is called to the cold, lonely scene of a suspicious death, he is baffled. Who is she? Where did she come from? How did she get there? How many more must die? Who is controlling them, and how can they be stopped?

What a great duo between this author and narrator

Come A Little Closer was one of the creepiest books just for its plausibility. This is a storyline that feels like it could happen and shows how trusting people can be of those they consider too old, or too weak, or just because they don’t feel like a threat. “Trust takes years to build, seconds to break and forever to repair.” This quote from Tom pretty much sums up the storyline. There are so many secrets and lies in this story.

It seriously starts out as a cluster… ok, through nearly half the audiobook it’s a bit of a conundrum. Rachel Abbott tosses out all these puzzle pieces one by one and you see the shape… but it’s a struggle to fit them together… but you keep listening and fitting piece by piece into its spot until you have the entire picture staring at you and you’re just plain shocked! OK, so that was me!

Then… that ending! This is definitely one you’re gonna want to listen to! Completely entrancing and completely hard to put together! Fantastic! Can’t wait for more! I love that for the most part we get this larger story but inside the story we learn about the main characters that stick with us through the series… Tom and Becky and a few others. I love hearing about their lives and how it has changed over time.

The narrator, Lisa Coleman, was an absolute pleasure to listen to. I enjoyed her British accent. I loved the way she was able to carry the tension of the story in her voice and tone. A narrator can really make or break a good book, and Miss Coleman only enhanced this story! What a great duo between this author and narrator. I’m definitely hoping for more from them.

I NEED MY CREDIT BACK

Too Long. Forced. Unreal. I could Probably buy into the story if it was a about only one woman. I don't want to give anything away, but I wish that I would have waited until it came to YouTube for a preview before wasting a credit. I think Rachel Abbott was banking on the success from the previous DCI Tom Banks novels and that her fans would be loyal readers and just follow along. I am upset with the Author and Audible. I almost started watching television again...NOT

Love it or leave it

I decided to leave it. Between the flashbacks and current times mixed it wth some dreams. I read a previous book by Rachel Abbott and liked it very much but this didnot have the same suspense and very believable story. I will try one more. I did like the reader who did a fine job.

Rachel Abbott has written a real thriller

Rachel Abbott has written a real thriller that kept me absorbed throughout. It’s an interesting comparison of how points of view can change drastically depending on just a few days in a young woman’s life. For those who have followed the DCI, he doesn’t play the main role this time although there’s one thrill in his life too. Recommended.

Dark and disturbing

I do like Rachel Abbot’s work and I am already used to her somehow difficult endings… sometimes they are a bit stretched but this time it is fully aligned with the dark and disturbing story. She did great with her deep diving into mind games and its consequences - however, from time to time the story meanders into unnecessary directions. Nevertheless, she writes very well and she touches on subjects that makes one think. She researches the topics in details and weaves the story around it. And as for the narrator, I am such a fan of Lisa Coleman that I would gladly listen to her reading the phone book.

Great Narration!

A well-woven story with likable—and not so likable— characters. I like how it all came together.

Awful. Depressing. Just don’t

OMG. I want my hours back. It was so awful. I was home sick w a mild concussion. This book helped me sleep. Tried listening later and it was depressing, misogynistic and well, awful. I read another book by same author that I loved. This is sooo different. I may exchange bec. It isn’t worth the credit😾

Truly suspenseful

This has been an amazing series! Since, these are free on Kindle Unlimited, I kept reading and enjoying so much. Now that the series has ended (hoping there will be more though), I don't think I will find another book like these.
Rachel Abbott has become my most favorite author. I don't know how she does this, but she is absolutely a master storyteller. I was never bored, always at the edge of my seat! Seven books with such thrilling rides were great pleasure. I will read these books again and again.

Great read

First few chapters I couldn’t quite place all the characters/events (not unusual for me with an audiobook) but once I got into it I absolutely loved it. Not necessary to have read others in series - perfectly fine as a “stand alone”. Can’t wait for Rachel’s next book!!

Rachel Abbot’s best yet!

Great story, plenty of twists and good characters. Well developed plot. Some of it slightly far-fetched but books in this genre always are!

Very good..

This took a while to get going, but it was definitely worth the wait. Some really interesting characters, great plot and surprising twists. The latter half of the book really kept me gripped.
Great narration from Lisa Coleman

Not my favourite I'm afraid

I have read most of Rachel Abbott's books and whilst I love most of her plots and enjoy her main characters, Tom Douglas et al, her incidental characters irritate me as they don't seem to have a modicum of common sense between the lot of them. In this book, Callie could have done with a swift kick up the bum. I found this plot tedious and unbelievable so I never really got into it. As for the "surprise" ending, I didn't really see how else it was going to end. Disappointing.

Mostly excellent!

This is a romping good read. The quality of the writing is excellent, with richly drawn characters. The story is genuinely gripping. However, I always find the situation with Tom’s girlfriend Louisa (we have met her in earlier books), an uninteresting distraction and, without giving away spoilers, the ending felt wrong, out of character for the main protagonist (and I don’t buy that earlier experiences would result in that) and unnecessary. Hence 4*

What a load of toot!

This must surely be my worst listen so far of 2020. Unbelievable rubbish with women making stupid choices, including voluntary imprisonment. Threw the towel in 3/4 of the way in.

Nothing redeeming for me in this book. No just no..

Very disappointed with this story.

This story is unbelievable and doesn't ring true. Women are drugged and imprisoned voluntary rather than face jail. The jail they are in is far worse than HMP. Struggled to read it to the end but did so as up until now a huge Rachel Abbott fan. I cannot in all honesty recommend this as a good read.

Not as good as expected

I love Rachel Abbott’s books but sadly not this one. The start was fantastic but then the whole main part wasn’t. The ending was better so I gave it 3 stars instead of only 2.

The story contiues seemlessly

Enjoyed a peak back into the world of DCI Tom Douglas. It seems a long time ago since the last book in the series, nonetheless, I was very happy to continue the journey and picked it up straight away from where the last left off ...hope it isn't top long until the next book. Looking forward to it.
