Women haven't been hired to work in my bar for a reason: they're too tempting and too distracting - too much of a liability - even if they are good for business....
That's why I shocked myself by hiring Avery Cole. She's young, carefree, and happy - a beautiful distraction. When she's around, the devastation of my past gets buried under layers of lust and desire...hints of a life I once lived but have completely given up on. I've already had my love and now that's gone; there's no need to try again. Even if love is staring me right in the face with a pair of deep brown eyes and no expectations.
What can I say about Shaw O'Sullivan? He's rude, abrasive, sexy - and my boss. He's also broken in ways I would never have seen if I hadn't been looking. Which means he should be off limits; my heart and body cannot handle his baggage. I'm on a quest to find myself, and Shaw O'Sullivan will only get in my way and drag me down.
Where I'm light, he's dark. We don't mix and neither of us is looking for love, so what happens when it finds us anyway?
Contains mature themes.

Great story

In this case I preferred the ebook to the audio. The female narrator just didn't capture Avery the way I wanted to hear her. But either way, this is a compelling story, so if you want a romance book that will take you on an emotional ride with characters that you can't help but love, in a unique setting, this is a good one.
Dramatic story about starting over

Kind of Long

After giving it a chance, I felt that it’s not a totally creepy age gap. If it wasn’t part of the book, it would somewhat detract from the plot. And when Shaw confesses, I lost it. 😭😭😭.
This book is so different from the usual romance tropes. It is easily relatable to real life situations. Very heavy topics tho, domestic abuse, spousal death, drug addiction so beware if these are your triggers.
Yes, the female performer is an acquired taste and I did skip her chapters in the beginning and was still able to piece things together. As it moved along, I was able to warm up to her voice. It is a long book but at some you point you don’t want it to end.
I still wish the age gap was less or she was older, but that’s my personal issue. The MFC does evolve and she isnt a push over from the beginning and only becomes stronger for herself.
Emotional 🥲
