In the year 3152, humanity is at war with three species who suppress our existence. While one is more ruthless than the others, our species is viewed as an unstable threat to the galactic balance.

Resources are finite, battle is ubiquitous, and the enemies of Earth are unrelenting. The average human is born to fight for the species’ survival, deprived of a normal life so that one day a future generation may know peace. The expansions of Alpha Centauri are under siege while the Wolf System is down to just a few outposts.

Not all is lost, though. Sol System is well-defended, a beacon of hope that desperately needs materials for its factories to support the war efforts. Call it luck, divine intervention, or just happenstance, but long-distance wormholes are finally discovered, and with them, expeditions into the depths of space bring hope of a restored balance.

A new initiative is born with the singular task of saving the species: The Colony Builders.

Alex, a hero clinging to the slim chance of victory, is initiated into the Colony Builders program. Sent to a distant solar system with a less than ideal crew, a basic replicator machine, and infinite blueprints, it's up to him to help turn the tide through colonization, industrialization, and manufacturing.

His efforts will either turn the Oculi System into something revered, or the planet's threats will consume him.

Perfect new planet?

To try to help save humanity in the war against the genocidal aliens, our MC and a bunch of science minded soldiers that physically can't fight any more are sent to one of the planets in the galaxy that might be good for stripping it's resources.
The Empire needs more of everything to survive.
They arrive on this beautiful paradise and start doing their jobs, but is this planet going to let them take everything?
Book was better than I expected and was truly an enjoyable read.
I'm giving this book 7 out of 5 stars.

actually good

I was not expecting much from this title but was pleasantly surprised. it kept my attention and the reader did well.

A good story to build on

I enjoy base building and hardcore science fiction. This narrative does a good job of setting the direction for the rest of the series.

Han Yang is amazing!

The narration and writing are 10/10 and this is such an easy listen. Boise Blue's narration is some of my favorite.

Colony Builders

This is another great book by Han Yang. He still continues to amaze. Like the title of the book, this was a great book involving world building with Alex.

Feels like an RTD or TD with a human face

This ticks the boxes for being a novelzation of a game like Factorio, Starcraft, or Mindustry. it's fun listening to how they move through the struggles of survival.

I'd say they climbed the tech tree a little too quickly. and they overcame obstacles based on a bit of deus ex machina. I'd love to hear more from this universe.

Good structure a little like time

Overall this is a good structured book there are some places where it lakes but overall it's one of those books that we know it's tortured as a strip mining operation basically ends app it sets everything app really well for the next spoke and shows the more quandaries that the main character has about what he's had to do in order to try and save The group And get his subject Matt

really interesting premise

not knowing if there will be a sequel blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah

a story of hope, survival, and constant threat

it I a wonderful si fi jump into the unknown in a desperate bid for survival of the species. a rag tag undermanned group of soldier try to build a resource colony on a hostile planet constantly trying to kill them. in the hopes that the resources they send back can turn the war and save earth.

Don't know if I'll finish.

I'm about a third of the way through the book, and I'm really struggling to continue. Everything just feels overly melodramatic.

In a story like this, I wanted the author to focus on the real nerdy stuff, on how you'd build a colony and the issues that would arise from that - a bit like The Martian, I guess. Scientific drama rather than emotional.

This book leans into the emotional drama, often glossing over the sciency stuff. It's a shame for me, but maybe not for others.

I have a theory when it comes to crying in books. Imo, there's a thing called a 'cry meter.' The more you have people crying due to adversity, the more you lessen the impact of tragedy in the future. If the meter empties too much because people are crying all the freaking time, when an actual tragedy happens, I just don't feel it. It doesn't hit as hard.

Even if it would make sense for some of these character to be crying nonstop, you keep pulling from the cry meter and me, as a reader, just stops caring. It's a bit much.
