"The Signal Man" is a magnificent, tightly focused ghost story. Dickens' charm pervades this mysterious and ominous tale. Various grim events occur but feel somewhat calm - not bloody or appalling, but enthralling and other worldly. Dickens invests the signal-man with education beyond his station. This adds to the credibility of the story as well as impressing the narrator. A must-listen for Dickens fans. An American voice at the request of our listeners.
Has Mr Brown ever read aloud before. He had no clue when it came to innovation, or emphasis. It sounded like his first read through Story it's one of my favorite ghost stories from my teenage years
The story is a good one but is irredeemably spoiled by the choice of an American narrator. His pronunciation and speech patterns are not British English and he read the story without any feeling for it. The many unnecessary pauses between words jarred badly.
