Listen to them all

Rather than try to track down all the stories by Poe just get this and listen to them. I now know where a lot of the 60's and 70's got there movie idea's that have bloomed into the ones being made. I recognized a movie Errol Flynn did before he died. A good listen.

Enthusiastic performance. Unlistenable production.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I wouldn't change the content or the enthusiastic performance but the high and low audio levels makes it nearly impossible to listen to. Be prepared to keep your pointer on the level controls as it goes from inaudible to blasting the eardrums at the drop of the hat.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Inaudible to ear blasting audio levels.

Poe is awesome

Narration did not deter the greatness of Poe. The characters were portrayed accurately. Audible books are a great idea.

Still great stories!

Poe is great. The voice artist that enlivens these stories is very talented. Not all the stories hold up, but most still hold a lot of power.

Underappreciated

There is a wide range of short stories in this collection. I have to say that I am rather fond of Poe's dark twisted tales.

Loved this collection of short stories!

Would you consider the audio edition of Edgar Allan Poe - The Complete Short Stories to be better than the print version?

I prefer the audio version rather than print.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I loved the angel of odd circumstances (I think that was what they called him). Great Hungarian accent...very fitting for the character...had me laughing.

Have you listened to any of Bob Thomley’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I honestly do not follow performers...I probably should take notice. Awesome narrator.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

This is an extremely long book. It is a collection of short stories, probably a few novellas. Enjoyable book, I am still listening .... have not heard all the stories yet.

Any additional comments?

I am guessing Poe must be one of the original "horror" authors. I love good horror, not just blood and guts...stories with a bit of a message to them. There is a reason his writings are still popular today. I highly recommend giving this collection a listen.

A Classic that should not be overlooked!

A wonderful compilation of fantastical stories of an incredible poet! Bob Thomley, beautifully narrates, although his particular inflection in some areas was hard to get used to.

The Many Sides of Poe

Edgar Allen Poe's writing was more varied than I thought. This collection has his 28 short stories plus the poem "The Raven".

I was pleasantly surprised by some of his humorous stories - such as "The Angel of Odd", "Some Words with a Mummy" and "The Spectacles". I also really enjoyed his Dupin stories that were predecessors of the detective genre and said to directly influence Arthur Conen Doyle's Sherlocke Holmes ("The Rue Morgue" and "The Purloined Letter").

But Poe is at his best with gothic horror - "The Tell Tale Heart", "The Black Cat", "The Pit and the Pendulum", and more.

Audio book is recent (2011) and narrated very well by Bob Thomley.
