Publisher's Summary

These brilliant stories deal with love and life in Louisiana during the Civil War through the turn of the century. The Cajun and French-Creole traditions make a rich backdrop for these deeply human tales. In "Disirie's Baby" a young plantation owner marries and has a child with features of the slave race; in "A Lady of Bayou St. John" a young woman becomes a devoted wife after her husband is killed; in "The Story of an Hour" a woman is surprised by her feelings at the news of her husband's death. Other stories include "Love on the Bon-Dieu," "The Unexpected," "Fedora," "The Godmother," and "At the 'Cadian Ball." After more than a half century of neglect, Kate Chopin's writings have at last regained the attention of readers, writers, and critics. These stories, some of her best, demonstrate her special insight and understanding of irony.

Critic Reviews

"Revolting against tradition and authority, with a daring which we can hardly fathom today;...[Kate Chopin] undertook to give the unsparing truth about woman's submerged life." (Per Seyersted, biographer of Kate Chopin)

Awful Audio

Would you try another book from Kate Chopin and/or Jacqueline Kinlow?

I will have to buy another version of the book to determine if I will.

Would you ever listen to anything by Kate Chopin again?

Yes, I like the author.

Would you be willing to try another one of Jacqueline Kinlow’s performances?

.

What character would you cut from Desiree's Baby?

Don't know - I couldn't hear the story!

Any additional comments?

Audible should filter out books with audio that cannot be heard.

Impossible to listen to

The quality of the recording is so bad that it is impossible to listen to. Unfortunately, I bought it too long ago to be eligible for a return. Audible should really not sell this rubbish at all. And there should be no time limit for returns if the reason is technical.

Oh dear.

I think I will have to find this story on kindle, or a secondhand book shop. I think this recording must be so old it is recorded on a wax cylinder. I can't honestly rate the story, as I can't hear it. I was interested in it because there was a reference to it another book I listened to recently.
