Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you might blow up a space station or two!

Dylan feels like he’s made it in life: Menagerie achieved victory, and Vert has contacted him to request the use of Dr. Zlo as the next big raid boss. The player has all sorts of maniacal plans in mind, from a new getaway car to death rays.

It’s too bad Dylan’s newfound fame is attracting attention from everyone. Random players are always on the lookout to join Dr. Zlo in his next crime, but their methods don’t resonate with the wacky villain. To top it all off, his once-friend John returns once more: bent on showing Dylan the correct way to play a videogame.

Between new players, the interference of a hardcore gamer, and Vert’s ineptitude, Dylan decides it’s time to make the ultimate villainous weapon and hold the world hostage!

Certainly a good read and a fine ending but I want a little more

I enjoy getting the same antics and humor out of the characters and there was a good amount of growth among the characters. Pretty much everything was resolved. With the exception of maybe a romance that was being set up (?) didn’t really need resolution just MC to realize it.
The battles can be interesting but there is so much going on it can be hard to follow. I had particular trouble with the climactic battle mostly because there was a timer that didn’t really match up with what was happening. I’m sorry you can say there are 20 seconds left but if there is 30 seconds of dialogue you can’t then say one second has passed.

Entertaining, Educational, and Fun

The story was entertaining and the performance is top-notch. I also enjoyed the amount of research the author put in to make the in-game design ideas frequently adhere to some fundamental principles of science and physics. Overall, a fun story across all three books in the series.

Dick Dastardly and the Wacky Races

Two of the great cartoon villains from the 1960's were Professor Fate (and Max) from the Great Race, and Dick Dastardly (and Muttley) from the Wacky Races.

Before Book 3 are 1&2, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Dr. Zlo's player, Dylan, wants to play the game to have fun. He's not so invested in winning, he just wants to play his ridiculous villain. He doesn't want exploits, he wants good role-playing. The real world is sometime in the near future, not too much different from now. It's just a VR game and Dylan wants to have fun playing an evil genius. I've gone through books 1&2 twice now, it's one of my favorite series.

Book 3 starts with Dylan getting offered a dodgy contract from the game company. Hmmm. But he has other plans. Dr. Zlo has now made numerous buildings and vehicles, and they've been destroyed. So now, he wants to introduce ... the Zlomobile! The world's greatest car. To build it, he'll need to perform a number of crimes for the components needed. Once it's built, the Zlomobile has to be properly introduced, so he stages a Great Wacky Race, inviting all heroes and villains to race against him. As his wingman, he has Cass, his loyal butler. And like all evil villains, he plans to cheat.

In one of the build-up scenes, he's secured a minor item from a museum, ready to leave, but one of the guards is interested in his plan. The player realizes that the guard is trying to stall for time. But Dr. Zlo would revel in this interest, so he monologues about his cunning scheme, just like a supervillain would.

It's glorious. This is the best book so far. I'll definitely listen to this one several times. Highly recommended.

The narrator does a better evil villain than Jack Lemmon. His other character voices are also fun to listen to. I laughed outloud more at the lunacy in this book than any other book or movie.
