Story
Cinder Shade’s life begins on a fateful afternoon at the bottom of a well where he awakens, bruised, battered, and bereft of all memory. His only understanding is a driving imperative to protect those who can’t defend themselves and become a warrior worthy of the name. Story
Michael J. Sullivan garnered critical raves and a massive readership for his Riyria Revelations series. The first book in his highly anticipated Riyria Chronicles series of prequels, The Crown Tower brings together warrior Hadrian Blackwater with thieving assassin Royce Melborn. The two form a less-than-friendly pairing, but the quest before them has a rare prize indeed, and if they can breach the supposedly impregnable walls of the Crown Tower, their names will be legend.

Story
It's 1949. When war veteran Aloysius Archer is released from Carderock Prison, he is sent to Poca City on parole with a short list of dos and a much longer list of don'ts: do report regularly to his parole officer, don't go to bars, certainly don't drink alcohol, do get a job - and don't ever associate with loose women. The small town quickly proves more complicated and dangerous than Archer's years serving in the war or his time in jail.

It began on New Year’s Eve. The sickness came on suddenly, and spread quickly. The fear spread even faster. Within weeks, everything people counted on began to fail them. The electrical grid sputtered; law and government collapsed - and more than half of the world’s population was decimated. Where there had been order, there was now chaos. And as the power of science and technology receded, magick rose up in its place.

The ancient magic of wizards was anything but dark. It was the enlightenment that lifted humanity from the squalor of superstition, and the worship of fell spirits and capricious gods, but those days are gone. The shining glory of the sorcerers burned away the subtlety of wisdom, replacing it with easy power, held only in the hands of the elite - a new age built upon the elemental supremacy of aristocrats and the ignorance of the masses.

Kell is one of the last Travelers - magicians with a rare, coveted ability to travel between parallel universes. As such, he can choose where he lands. There's Grey London, dirty and boring, without any magic, ruled by a mad King George. Then there's Red London, where life and magic are revered, and the Maresh Dynasty presides over a flourishing empire. There's White London, ruled by whoever has murdered their way to the throne. And once upon a time, there was Black London...but no one speaks of that now.

Everyone loves Mathias. Naturally, when he discovers it’s his destiny to save the world, he dives in headfirst, pulling his best friend, Aaslo, along for the ride. However, saving the world isn’t as easy, or exciting, as it sounds in the stories. The going gets rough, and folks start to believe their best chance for survival is to surrender to the forces of evil, which isn’t how the prophecy goes. At all. As the list of allies grows thin and the friends find themselves staring death in the face, they must decide how to become the heroes they were destined to be.

Concerned that technology is about to chase mythological creatures out into the open (how long can Sasquatch stay hidden from Google maps?), the League for Interspecies Cooperation is sending Jillian to Louisiana on a fact-finding mission. While the League hopes to hold on to secrecy for a little bit longer, they're preparing for the worst in terms of human reactions. They need a plan, so they look to Mystic Bayou, a tiny town hidden in the swamp where humans and supernatural residents have been living in harmony for generations.

Listen again and again.
Eddie LaCrosse is an unlikely yet totally believable hard boiled detective, in an unlikely but believable medieval world. I'd love to meet him and know him. And the occasional anachronisms, which fit perfectly, make me smile with delight every time.
Stefan Rudnicki has the perfect "Eddie" voice. His character accents absolutely personify a "hard boiled" medieval world, and actually make the stories (if possible) better.
And Rudnicki's voice is liquid dark chocolate velvet. I could listen to him read a phone book, or a doctoral dissertation written in passive voice, and still be happy.
I can (and have) listened to the Eddie LaCrosse stories over and over, and loved then every time.
They're on my "listen to these when you need a reliably entertaining story" list.

Another Winner for Bledsoe!
Great continuing adventure for Eddie LaCrosse who seems to never stop winding up on the wrong side of the sword at the right time... Another fantasy/mystery told in Raymond Chandler style by the deep rich voice of Stefan Rudnicki. No better narrator could have been chosen to give the story it's 1930's mystery novel feel - while being interestingly set in a medieval fantasy. I look forward to continuing LaCrosse novels.
In this story, Eddie is nearly killed trying to help a young girl after being thrown down a cliff with his horse. He takes up the investigation into who these strange men are and what was so important about the girl.

Alex Bledsoe and Stefan Rudnicki GREAT!
This is the second book in the series of "Eddie LaCross". The first book "Sword-Edged Blond" was fantastic, and should be read first. there is humor and mystery and a bit of magic and brutal reality. A hard edged detective, who carries a sword, and tries very hard to bury his past that has tortured him. Start this series with book 1 "Sword-Edged Blond" then continue with "Burn Me Deadly". You will laugh, and run the gambit of emotions with Eddie. I am looking forward to now listening to "Dark Jenny" third book in this series. I recommend this series and I am looking forward to listening to more from Alex Bledsoe.

Very dissatisfied with Plus options
Audible software engineers removed the ability of windows 10 users to download plus offerings. Since I live in the country and have a metered (expensive) ISP, I must go to town to the library to download selections to my mp3 player for listening at home. For some reason, I must log on to the audible web site to purchase a book, then sign off and launch the "audible app" to download to a device. These steps also apply when attempting to delete a plus catalog selection, because Audible software engineers removed the ability to download plus selections. However any plus selections I chose before I knew of this mess, are still in my library and causing confusion. I was given instructions by support on how to delete them, however the instructions do not work! Every time I post this issue, I receive a satisfaction survey. When I fill out the survey and click submit, I receive an incomprehensible error message and the feedback is not submitted.

Eddie LaCrosse is my new fave anti-hero!
This was the second story I read from the Eddie LaCrosse series from Alex Bledsoe.
LaCrosse's medieval times detective is a cross between the wize-cracking Harry Dresden and the investigatory genius, Sherlock Holmes, with a healthy heaping of D'Artagnan thrown in.
First, I love Bledsoe's dialogue-writing style, using modern syntax and vernacular, and his tongue-in-cheek clever way of using a modern phrases reverse-engineered to reference a medieval staple.
Bledsoe's characters are interesting, complex, and the plot never plods. Pure entertainment from start to finish. Also, Stefan Rudnicki is, as always, exceptional. His buttery man-vocals and timing are spot on.
Invest in the Eddie Lacrosse series - you'll love it!

Fun story but...
I enjoyed the story. It is well-paced and well-written, and the narrator is incredible for about 80% of the book. Unfortunately, distracting mouth clicks and pops fill the remaining 20%. Re-recording these click-riddled sections before publication would have improved the product.
Despite these challenges, the story is worth a listen.

Sam Spade meets game of thrones
Very listenable and a unique idea. A medieval film noir. This gun for hire becomes this sword for hire. Very difficult plots and not predictable so far ( I’m up to book 4 now). Excellently read in a film noir narration style with believable characters. It passed the interest test as I carried the player from room to room rather than just leave it playing whilst I nipped to the kitchen etc.

Any additional comments?
A really enjoyable blend of fantasy and hard-boiled PI detective story. It had me grinning at the familiar tropes given a new twist.
