Publisher's Summary

Few people survive the suffering that Kael Symes has experienced. Hot steel, demonic magic, and the loss of those he loved.

After escaping the horrors of Arkum Zul, Kael and his companions survive a terror-filled night on the ocean only to find themselves shipwrecked and stranded in the Wildlands. With forest tribals on the warpath and old enemies roaming the forest, Kael struggles to come to terms with what he is slowly becoming - a killer. A DeathWizard.

In the fight against the evil that threatens to consume him, Kael learns that the Dwarven Mountains far to the north may hide an ancient monolith that holds the answer to the corruption that flows in his veins.

But trekking across Talohna is a dangerous prospect. It is a world that holds its secrets close. The cost of uncovering them may very well be his soul and, quite possibly, his life.

Very Frustrating! Parts are really well done<br />

As others have indicated the over use of coincidental non encounters is way over done

Frustrating, and dissapointing

You know those movies where problems could be solved if the girl didn't run away and just listened to a few words? This book reads like this. Every character makes such bad decisions that could be avoided if they just sat and think for 10 mins. I loved the first book, but this second was just too frustrating having me wish everyone would just die from their poor decisions.

Good wtiting Bad book

I want to say this book is really great I really do the writings well done and the story is good but the author seems to want to use so many clifhangers the book becomes impossible to read. I would gladly read this book if literally, he wrote one line differently.

This book is incredibly infuriating the entire permise of the book seems to be the MC dealing with prejudice and whatnot but the author dangles a massive clifhanger over you for the entire two books so what might have been amazeing turns into a really infuriating book about the MC failing to find his wife or even learn shes alive when he could learn for some magical reason one of the characters happens to be in the way and stop him I wouldn't mind it so much if it didnt feel like it was just the author teasing the reader his wife has an ability to dream walk and straight up told him she was alive through dreams but for some reason he believes that his wife is dead even though their entire backstory says even on the most faint hope he would believe she was alive not only that but his wife can teleport and she never once seems to try teleporting to him.

Gripping and Exciting

Very fast paced and action packed and love the world building. Wasn't expecting the ending to be like this. Can't wait to read the next book.

Good narration for a terrible story.

The MC can't seem to stay consistent in his behavior throughout book 1 and 2. Constantly changing how he behaves; but not in a character development type of way. The author leaves cliffhanger after cliffhanger never resolving anything. You are constantly going between perspectives of other characters that are written in such a way that you don't like any of them. yet you will need the information to understand whats going on. Just no; a waste of time. this book is a Hard Pass.

Worth a listen, struggled to finish

Don't get me wrong, I like the world that has been created, and the story we are following is interesting. But I found myself lost a few times trying to connect too many people to each other (mostly with secondary characters) and the amount of near misses and misunderstandings just left me annoyed.

Simon Vance was amazing as ever.

I'll consider getting the next book as I do want the story to continue, I'm just dreading even more misunderstandings.

Great epic fantasy with a few niggles.

I'll break this review down into a few sections to make it easier to see what I liked and didn't like.

Characters: Largely excellent characters that are brought to life in full 3d. Each are distinct and have a depth of personality, character, strengths and weaknesses that set them clearly apart from each other. Like or loath the character they are certainly fully formed and fun to follow.

Story: The story is what you expect from a good epic fantasy. It is deep with plenty of plots being embarked on by the main characters and those that are targeting them with good or ill intentions. The magic system the author has made is a good one, though the spells being used might have had a bit more depth at times I though. I also thought that at times they story dragged a little, but never quite enough to bore me too much.

Negatives: Convenient magic and stupidity were two of my main issues. The issue with the magic came about from our DarkWizard. When he first arrives he is saved a couple of times by casting a shield on instinct to save his life. Yet later this stops happening. It's possible that his tattoo is the issue, abut at no point does he try to fix this or even try to cast the shield with his will when he starts to understand his magic a little more. Given how often he is nearly killed I can't believe this would not be a priority for anyone. Likewise he carries around a Grimoire for months that he looks in a total of two times and one of those is to show someone else the book. He wants to learn about who and what he is and how his powers work but makes no real effort to look at more of the book.

Stupidity is where the author makes a character do something that isn't likely for any sane intelligent person to do just because the plot needs them to do it. Some of it would be like me entering evil lair, seeing a pentagram surrounded by candles and thinking it would be an awesome idea to go stand in the middle.

There are other things where characters ignore stuff they likely wouldn't in reality, or say things that aren't likely just because if they did it would radically change things in how the plot went.

Overall: The two books are a good listen, made all the better by having Simon Vance as the narrator. He in my top three narrators for fantasy fiction and does his usually excellent job here too. Overall I certainly recommend this series of books and there is plenty of story left to tell after this one.

Great idea no delivery

Had its moments but glaring obvious plot holes and total stupidity by main characters made me give up on this series. Such a shame as i loved the ideas.

An improvement over the first book.

I feel the pacing was much improved compared with the previous book. I'm hoping the third will finally fill in some of the big pieces missing from the puzzle so far!

Frustrating, illogical and inconsistent writing.

I really love the premise of the story and the world. The narration is brilliant in my opinion, too.
The execution is just incredibly frustrating, the characters are forever kept apart by highly inconsistent decisions. The entire series is filled with terrible, illogical decisions from characters that go against all prior character building.

If someone hunting Kael for being an evil deathwizard said: 'Why did you kill that poor innocent group of orphans?' Of course, those orphans would've been literal demons eating children, but instead of defending himself he'd say something ludicrous like: 'They deserved it! I only wish I killed more of the disgusting things!'

This book is not terrible

Instead of having a 10 or 12 hour book they dragged out to a 20 hour and just added bits and pieces that make it even worse they've had the same plot for the last two books and it's absolutely terrible
