Publisher's summary

Book 12 in the Gaunt's Ghosts Series

An enemy prisoner demands to speak to Gaunt, throwing the Tanith First into a murderous web of secrets and lies that could decide the fate of the Sabbat Worlds Crusade.

LISTEN TO IT BECAUSE

Follow the intrigue as, even on leave, Gaunt's Ghosts find themselves in trouble... A dangerous enemy prisoner will only speak to Gaunt (who's apparently dead, if Imperial records are to be believed), and the Ghosts find themselves mixed up with mysterious criminal gangs.

THE STORY

The Tanith First have been pulled back from the front line and are enjoying some well-deserved rest – but that is about to end. An enemy prisoner – one of the deadly Blood Pact – wants to betray his masters, but he will only talk to Colonel-Commissar Ibram Gaunt. Can he be trusted, and what exactly does he know? Gaunt must discover the truth and avert a deadly threat to both his own life and to the Sabbat Worlds Crusade itself.

A poignant and well-told story

Once again, Tony Longworth brings another of Abnett’s best stories to life. Great story, great narration. I can only hope that they re-record Salvation’s Reach and The Warmaster. The other narrator was good, but I’m a sucker for continuity. One can hope.

Abnett continues to amaze

If you're this far into Gaunt's story you certainly don't need me to tell you how great Abnett's writing is. The story of the Ghosts continues to delight.

can't miss

Dan Abnett and Toby Longworth are the best possible combination. Another fantastic book. Honestly, I've been looking forward to this day for quite some time, because now I'm going back and listening to them all, in a row. Now that I mention it I'll just do the entirety of the Sabbat Crusade books, see yall in what like, couple hundred hours?

Great story and narration, as always

This another great Gaunt’s Ghosts story. I really like the setting of this one, with the ghosts away from the front lines in a snowbound city marked deeply by war.

Great listen and fantastic performance...

As usual, Dan Abnett excels and shows how amazing his creative mind can be when let loose in the 40K universe. Absolutely loved this entry in the Gaunt's Ghosts series of stories. Well done!!!

History is written by the winners

Abnett takes us back to Balhaut, the pivotal battle that shaped his career and shaped a whole military campaign. He sees firsthand how the imperium can convolute history. He confronts old demons from his past. Some are new and some are old enemies or situation he’d thought long behind him. The ghosts, having grown lax and bored in their garrison posting get up to some shenanigans. The usual suspects getting in trouble again.

I think the whole story takes place in a matter of 2 days but they are 2 days of action, intrigue and chaos. I always like it when Abnett goes into details about the arch enemy and their ways. The rituals and magics and doctrine they adhere to. Most of the time it’s left to our imagination what happens in their minds and in their hierarchical system.

Mr. Longworth is the voice of Tanith in my opinion. As good as these stories are his narration is the icing on an already delicious literary cake. The combination is so good it gives me a toothache!

Looking forward to more audio dramas by these gentlemen.
