Story
Pigeonholed in popular memory as a Jazz Age epicurean, a playboy, and an emblem of the Lost Generation, F. Scott Fitzgerald was at heart a moralist struck by the nation's shifting mood and manners after World War I. In Paradise Lost, David Brown contends that Fitzgerald's deepest allegiances were to a fading antebellum world he associated with his father's Chesapeake Bay roots. Yet as a midwesterner, an Irish Catholic, and a perpetually in-debt author, he felt like an outsider in the haute bourgeoisie haunts.

According to Whyte, we humans are involved not just with one marriage with a significant other. We also have made secret vows to our work and unspoken vows to an inner, constantly developing self. Whyte's thesis is that to separate these marriages in order to balance them is to destroy the fabric of happiness itself; that in each of these marriages, will, effort, and hard work are overused, overrated, and in many ways self-defeating.

Editorial reviews
Whether in good times for jubilation or troubled times to seek advice, we always turn back to the books we love the most. This is perhaps especially true of women, drawn in by female protagonists and the lives of the female authors who imagined them. There are, of course, many different kinds of women Erin Blakemore’s debut collection has something for each of them. A round-up of the dozen most influential novels in Blakemore’s life, The Heroine’s Bookshelf is a simple necessity for anybody looking to reminisce about the classic works that changed all of our lives.
Repeated Audie Award-nominee and multiple AudioFile Earphones Award-winner Tavia Gilbert works her magic here as usual. Gilbert gives wonderful life to a cast of characters that everyone is already familiar with, breathing a new energy into famously quotable moments, but transforming them with all due respect to the original images of the characters we have come to know and love. Her range in this regard is remarkable. Gilbert tackles Janie Crawford from Zora Neale Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God in the chapter on faith, and then jumps to Ann Shirley from Lucy Maude Montgomery’s Ann of Green Gables in the next chapter on happiness.
Blakemore organizes each chapter based on an examination of a theme that runs between the life of the character and the life of the woman who authored her. Full of particularly astute observations are the chapters on dignity with southern favorite Alice Walker, compassion with reclusive one-book wonder Harper Lee, and indulgence with French libertine Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette (the only author included in the book who is perhaps a bit outside the mainstream). There are also the rest of the usual suspects, from Jo March to Jane Eyre. Gilbert’s narration renders all of Blakemore’s contemporary analysis in vivid color, and there is something to love in all of these women, whether you are looking for solace or celebration. Megan Volpert
Publisher's summary
The literary canon is filled with intelligent, feisty, never-say-die heroines, and legendary female authors. Like today’s women, they too placed a premium on personality, spirituality, career, sisterhood, and family. When their backs were against the wall, characters like Scarlett O’Hara, Jo March, Jane Eyre, and Elizabeth Bennet fought back - sometimes with words, sometimes with gritty actions. Their commonsense decisions resonate even more powerfully in a world where women are forced to return to the basics, paring down and shoring up their resources for what lies ahead.
In this compelling book of beloved heroines and the remarkable writers who created them, Erin Blakemore explores how the pluck and dignity of literary characters, such as Scout Finch and Jo March, can inspire women today. She divides these legendary characters into chapters that pair each with her central quality - Anne Shirley is associated with irrepressible “Happiness"; Scarlett O’Hara personifies “Fight”. Each chapter includes insights into the authors’ lives, revealing how their own strengths informed their timeless characters.
From Zora Neale Hurston to Colette, Laura Ingalls Wilder to Charlotte Brontë, Jane Austen to Alice Walker, here are some of the most cherished authors and characters in literature.

Some of the most effective talk therapy is self-talk therapy - learning to connect positively with that internal voice that serves as your own personal GPS to guide you through life. Rabbi Shmuley teaches the reader to reconnect with the inner voice of conscience, the source of personal dreams and values, which has been so drowned out by the noise of a culture that emphasizes form over substance, career over calling, and consumption over conviction. Drawing on Rabbi Shmuley's extensive counseling experience, this book helps you defeat negative self-talk.

Story
At the end of her best-selling memoir Eat, Pray, Love, Elizabeth Gilbert fell in love with Felipe, a Brazilian-born man of Australian citizenship who'd been living in Indonesia when they met. Resettling in America, the couple swore eternal fidelity to each other, but also swore to never, ever, under any circumstances get legally married. But providence intervened one day in the form of the United States government....

Story
One of the main topics of cultural conversation during the last decade was the supposed "fertility crisis" and whether modern women could figure out a way to have it all - a successful, demanding career and the required 2.3 children - before their biological clocks stopped ticking. Now, however, conversation has turned to whether it's necessary to have it all (see Anne-Marie Slaughter) or, perhaps more controversial, whether children are really a requirement for a fulfilling life.

By all appearances, Zainab Salbi has had an impressive life. Growing up as the daughter of Saddam Hussein’s personal pilot, she eventually became a celebrated humanitarian and activist. Yet, as she was helping thousands of women in war-torn countries, Salbi’s personal life was coming to a crisis. In Freedom Is an Inside Job, Salbi explores her own riveting journey to wholeness - and how embarking on such a journey enables each of us to create the world we want to live in. After years of working as a successful CEO and change-maker, Salbi realized that if she wanted to confront and heal the shadows of the world, she needed to face her own shadows first.

Story
In The Voice Is All, Joyce Johnson - coauthor of the classic memoir Door Wide Open, about her relationship with Jack Kerouac - brilliantly peels away layers of the Kerouac legend to show how, caught between two cultures and two languages, he forged a voice to contain his dualities. Looking more deeply than previous biographers into how Kerouac's French Canadian background enriched his prose and gave him a unique outsider's vision of America, she tracks his development from boyhood through the phenomenal breakthroughs of 1951 that resulted in the composition of On the Road.

Born in London to an American father and a British mother on the eve of the Revolutionary War, Louisa Catherine Johnson was raised in circumstances very different from the New England upbringing of future president John Quincy Adams, whose life had been dedicated to public service from the earliest age. And yet John Quincy fell in love with her almost despite himself. Their often tempestuous but deeply close marriage lasted half a century.

Story
Biographers have consistently credited her father, Bronson Alcott, for Louisa May Alcott's professional success, assuming that this outspoken idealist was the source of her progressive thinking and remarkable independence. But in this riveting dual biography, Eve LaPlante explodes those myths, drawing on unknown and unexplored letters and journals to show that Louisa's "Marmee", Abigail May Alcott, was in fact the intellectual and emotional center of her daughter's world. It was Abigail who urged Louisa to write, who inspired many of her stories, and who gave her the support and courage she needed to pursue her path.

Story
Herman Melville's epic novel, Moby-Dick, was a spectacular failure when it was published in 1851, effectively ending its author's rise to literary fame. Because he was neglected by academics for so long, and because he made little effort to preserve his legacy, we know very little about Melville, and even less about what he called his "wicked book". Scholars still puzzle over what drove Melville to invent Captain Ahab's mad pursuit of the great white whale.

Author's bio or personal melodrama?
Not quite what I hoped for. Much of this book is a really interesting review of great authors and wonderful stories. But then we have to go through all of the sophomoric opinions and gushing feminism, ugh. The author's thesus is wonderful, but then becomes way too "in your face" and overdramatic. The reader is very talented (great accents), but she starts out so strident and shrill, that it is very hard to get past it. I suggest skipping the introduction all together.

meh!
What disappointed you about The Heroine’s Bookshelf?
While so many of the heroines described are focused outside of themselves, the author keeps returning to Self. Had hoped there would be more depth.
