Publisher's Summary

We all saw it at once. Half a dozen voices screamed, 'Grenade!' simultaneously. Then everything went into slow motion. The grenade took an age to travel through its 20 metre arc. A dark, small oval-shaped package of misery the size of a peach....

April 2004: Dan Mills and his platoon of snipers flew into Southern Iraq, part of an infantry battalion sent to win hearts and minds. They were soon fighting for their lives.

Back home we were told they were peacekeeping. But there was no peace to keep. Because within days of arriving in theatre, Mills and his men were caught up in the longest, most sustained firefight British troops had faced for over 50 years.

This awe-inspiring account tells of total war in throat-burning winds and 50-degree heat, blasted by mortars and surrounded by heavily armed militias. For six months they fought alone: isolated, besieged and under constant enemy fire. Their heroic stand was a modern-day Rorke's Drift.

    "Cracking listen!"

having been to Iraq on challenger 2 I can relate to this book. I knew the cimic story already but brilliant to hear it first hand. My only issue was with the way he said "gimpy" it's pronounced as "jimpy" unless PWRR called it that I don't know but we knew it as "jimpy" still a top book!

    "Shockingly bad narrator"
Would you try another book written by Dan Mills or narrated by Josh Dylan?

Dan Mills - yes, Josh Dylan - NEVER

What was one of the most memorable moments of Sniper One?

Can't listen to all the book because the narration is so bad

How could the performance have been better?

He can't do accents ... he tries but ends up doing the same voice for all different people. He's no Paul Thornley!!

Do you think Sniper One needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

    No idea!

    Any additional comments?

Story seemed half decent but spoilt by the narrator ... would try again if the narrator was changed.

    "Great story, well told."

Probably the audiobook I've most enjoyed so far.
I'd never really known the story before so didn't know what to expect. But was pleasantly surprised.

other negative comments regarding the narration style are irrelevant I think. it's a strong account and never gets dull. I very pleased that I listened to it.

"Excellent true story right to the very end!"

My son read the book and recommended it to me. So I joined Audible.com and listened. It was riveting from the start to the finish. At first I thought the narrator lacked gravitas but after a while I realised he had the right tone and cadence to deliver the narrative in a gripping way. The bravery of the platoon increases as the story unfolds. Listening to it doesn't do justice to what went on but it provides a solid base for respecting those who serve their country. I thoroughly recommend this as a modern account of fighting unconventional opponents using traditional well trained and well honed Brit

"Average telling of a great insight into modern war"

something didn't work for me with the narrator. the lack of writing experience/skills, that often can work (e.g. soldier spy), didn't here. But what the guys went through did come out and was worth persisting through to the end. It is also sad how the British people and government seem so eager to discard our forces so easily.

    "Great book TERRIBLE NARRATION"

The story was good. descriptions good BUT possibly the WORST narration ever. Poor accents, terrible expression, tries too hard. Just BAD BAD BAD. Totally ruined a good book. will avoid this reader in future, however good the book is.
