Audible Editor Reviews

Why we think it's Essential: Isaacson is the modern master of the biography, so it was only natural that he turn his pen to Einstein. And more than any biography of the past, Isaacson's account unravels the life behind the brain and provides a full picture of the man who embodied the scientific spirit of the 20th century. Edward Herrmann is stirring and moves effortlessly from humorous anecdotes to scientific theories. —Chris Doheny

Publisher's Summary

How did Einstein's mind work? What made him a genius? Isaacson's biography shows how his scientific imagination sprang from the rebellious nature of his personality. His fascinating story is a testament to the connection between creativity and freedom.

Based on the newly released personal letters of Albert Einstein, Walter Isaacson explores how an imaginative, impertinent patent clerk, a struggling father in a difficult marriage who couldn't get a teaching job or a doctorate, became the mind reader of the creator of the cosmos, the locksmith of the mysteries of the atom and the universe. His success came from questioning conventional wisdom and marveling at mysteries that struck others as mundane. This led him to embrace a morality and politics based on respect for free minds, free spirits, and free individuals.

These traits are just as vital for this new century of globalization, in which our success will depend on our creativity, as they were for the beginning of the last century, when Einstein helped usher in the modern age.

It's all relative: listen to more about Albert Einstein.

    "Mixed"

Having read Einstein's Wife first, this version struck me as untrustworthy and overly glorifying of Einstein. I acknowledge that the involvement of his wife in Einstein's early success is hotly debated, and that in the final analysis we really can't know for sure. This author, however, too readily dismisses any claims that diminish Einstein's character and abilities. Any search of the Internet would reveal credible sources casting probable shadows of doubt on this author's optimism. I had to constantly take this accounting lightly and suspend my belief in numerous instances to get through it. I also felt a lack of any real engagement with, or voice of, Einstein himself as one reviewer also noted.

"Great performance, thin on science, bad cover"

As the title says, the performance is great, very easy to listen to. I wish the book spent more time on Einstein's science as opposed to his domestic affairs. Finally, frankly I can't stand the cover, which has a funny looking actor's face on it. why can't we use the real Einstein on the cover?

"The incredible story of the world's leading mind"

After having watched the miniseries Genius: Einstein on the National Geographic channel I found myself compelled to know more about the physicist who changed the way we look at the universe. Although he is basically known for the equation E equals mc squared, the theory of relativity and the atomic bomb, he excelled in so many other areas. His contributions during decades to fighting injustice and oppression in the face of complete adversity (Nazism just to name one of them) is a testament to his greatness. He definitely lived a life worth living.

The author, Walter Isaacson, wrote a very engaging biography of an enlightened and complex man (although Einstein always praised simplicity) and the narrator Edward Hermann did a wonderful job in captivating and maintaining my attention over the many hours. In the end I felt a little disappointed that the audiobook eventually had to come to an end.

    "strong writing and narration"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Isaacson's book is well researched and provides insight into Einstein's character. It also explains the scientific theories in a comprehensible way. He provides skepticism of some famous Einstein myths. The writing is excellent, without cliché and with the appropriate tone for such a biography. Do we need another Einstein biography? Even if we don't, this is the one general interest biography to read.

What about Edward Herrmann’s performance did you like?

warm reading with correct amount of emotion. Generally correct pronunciation of scientific terms, persons' names and German words. This is one of the best readings I've heard in Audible

    Any additional comments?

Recommended for its research, writing and narration. I give it high marks all the way around.
