Publisher's Summary

The number-one international best seller - and the Grammy-award winner for best spoken album in 2006.

Before Barack Obama became a politician, he was, among other things, a writer. Dreams from My Father is a masterpiece: a refreshing, revealing portrait of a young man asking the big questions about identity and belonging.

The son of a black African father and a white American mother, Obama recounts an emotional odyssey. He retraces the migration of his mother's family from Kansas to Hawaii, then to his childhood home in Indonesia. Finally he travels to Kenya, where he confronts the bitter truth of his father's life and at last reconciles his divided inheritance.

Critic Reviews

"A remarkable story, beautifully told." ( Observer)
"This may be the best-written memoir ever produced by an American politician." (Joe Klein, Time magazine)
"Extraordinary . . . truly moving . . . Obama is a born narrator, with a mastery of colour, scene and personality." (Simon Jenkins, Sunday Times)

Characters brought to life

I read the book, and then for a college course I was assigned the book again. This time I choose to listen to the audio version and I was not disappointed. This story comes to life in Barack's voice and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Inspiring

I will recommend this work and I have done so several times because it gives a totally enlightening background to a man that I already hold in high esteem. Read by the author and man himself in a clear and entertaining way this book is a pleasure to have in my Audible library. Bringing to the fore lots about Barack that I previously did not know (probably due to being a Brit rather than a USAnian) and making me want to know more still. A soothing voice, an inspiring man and a stirring story make this one of my favourite Non Fiction Audible works.

A superb listen

Not a book I would have usually chosen, but I am so pleased I did. I loved the narration by Barack and found his story inspiring. It gives Barack a human side I had never known.

I listened through my GPS in the car and I loved the fact that Obama narrated. Accents and all. Great work!

Inspiring

Ok, I am drinking the Kool-Ade of Barack Obama. But I do it without regret and with great enthusiasm. More so now that I’ve listened to him read his book to me, if that’s even possible. My respect for him rides on my observation of his integrity, hope and faith displayed while he was president and since. It was only increased by hearing the story of his life up until he got married/was elected Senator.

Inspiring.

And needed now, possibly more than ever. Beautifully written and the man knows how to read his words well to an audience.

Inspiring

Made me want to binge it from the beginning. An incredible account from an incredible life. Clearly a humble person who brings his story to life by recounting the footprints others have left in his life. Definitely worth a read to remind us all of hope.

Brilliant

Fantastic life story spanning many years and involving a number of the Obama family. Great insight to his upbringing and how he became the man that ended up as President of the USA. Read with emotional inflictions making it almost breath taking in places with words almost poetically written. A real must read.
