Publisher's summary

Stealing from a mage was both the best and worst thing I had ever done.

After being caught, I was named a criminal and sent to a prison known as the Jade Bastion. Located at the Edge of the World, this prison carries a secret. Those inmates who have magical abilities are trained in the most powerful magic known to the empire: battle magic.

To survive, I will need to discover a secret I didn't know I possessed. I can become more powerful through bonding with the other beautiful, magically inclined inmates.

This will be my greatest trial yet, but if I can grow stronger, I might just survive it and become a Battle Mage.

Phenomenal opening story full of excitement

This story line is nonstop excitement. Well developed characters with both depth and background usually unseen. The performance of readers brings the characters to life, providing a great level of enjoyment.

A Pleasant Surprise

I came into this with expectations of subpar story, and heavy on random "woohoo" moments. By the end I was invested and want more. One of the few books were a harem makes more sense then not.

Starts strong and ends strong

Great first book in a new series. The beginning of the book starts fast and I immediately felt comfortable with the MC. The middle third of the book was a little slower but still gives peaks of drama and humor. The final third of the book also ends strong with great fights and achievements.
The narrators were excellent, and it was easy to tell which character was speaking just by the different voices used by the narrators.
I am greatly looking forward to the next installment of this book.

wow, just...wow

I love it when you try a book you're not sure about and it becomes your instant favorite! I loved this world, the battle mage concept, the ever present danger and especially the way spells are learned I'm completely blown away and I need more.

Yeah not going to lie it took me awhile to like this one because i couldn't get out of my head that the Mc is pretty much a slave but its cool since he will be serving the "light"

Good Story, but fails to fully explore situations

I think the author skips over some great potential situations. Almost like he is in a hurry to get finished. The MC seems to go unpunished on a lot of serious situations, where others would be challenged to get through their punishments. As their cohort goes through training, there are missed opportunities to play them off against other older classmen. Things seem to come too easy to Leo. Still it leaves you wanting to know what's next for them.

Definitely not his best series, definitely a flop.

The main character is kinda gross because he’s so full of himself, the dialogue is redundant and mostly just empty word salad to fill out the book. Lewis Alexander is a bit over the top and it can be difficult to take the character seriously.

Over all it’s a bit frustrating to listen to, and I feel like Dante King has done much better in other series. This in combination with his prolific output makes me wonder if he uses ghost writers.
