The fortuitous opportunity provided by The Great Trial of Water Crest to numerous young cultivators is coming to an end.
For Li Lang and his companions, this means being thrust back into a cesspool of intrigue and politics, all while under the scrutiny of powerful cultivators who will stop at nothing to unravel the secrets of the pocket realm.
The realities of their situation may soon force them to make difficult decisions—choices that could change everything. Even so, Li Lang and his friends have no intention of slowing down, for they have great plans ahead.
The only way forward is to grow stronger. By leveraging the tools and principles of scientific inquiry, their goal is clear: to decipher a systematic path to the next major realm—Foundation Establishment.
Book 2 of this Xianxia Progression Fantasy Series that blends Cultivation and a scientific approach to studying how it works.
The series features slow burn progression as Langley ranks up, an intelligent MC, sect building, and so much more.

One of the things I continue to enjoy most about this series is how different it feels from most cultivation stories. The main character isn't a cultivation genius, nor is he secretly blessed with overwhelming talent. In fact, one of the central challenges of the series is that he has below-average cultivation talent and must constantly find creative ways to overcome that limitation.
What makes the story work so well is that he approaches cultivation as a scientist rather than as a traditional cultivator. Instead of relying on destiny, luck, or hidden bloodlines, he develops theories, runs experiments, gathers data, and tries to understand why things work. It feels like we took a scientist from Earth and dropped him into a cultivation world to see what would happen.
I especially enjoy how much of the story focuses on discovery and innovation. The main character creates new techniques, develops new methods, and works to improve the cultivation process itself. In many ways, he spends as much time advancing the field as he does advancing himself.
One of the more interesting aspects of the series is his willingness to test his ideas on willing students. He understands the limitations of experimenting solely on himself and recognizes the value of larger sample sizes and controlled observation. The result is a fascinating blend of cultivation, teaching, and scientific research that feels unlike anything else I've read in the genre.
I also continue to enjoy the tension between his methods and the broader cultivation world. Traditional cultivators often view his work with suspicion, forcing him to walk a difficult line between competing factions and philosophies. He isn't interested in becoming what others accuse him of being, but circumstances continually push him into uncomfortable positions.
If I had one observation, it's that this series sometimes focuses more on the advancement of knowledge than on the advancement of the protagonist himself. That's not necessarily a criticism—it is part of what makes the story unique—but readers looking for nonstop personal power growth may find the pacing different from more traditional cultivation novels.
For me, however, the world, the ideas, and the scientific approach continue to make this series stand out. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and will absolutely be continuing with the series.
The narrator also did an excellent job bringing the story to life.
