In the action-packed first book of this portal fantasy series, the monster messiah will rise—not the hero they need, but the hat they deserve....

Manga-loving gamer Ethan Graham is a frustrated Boston-area tax consultant toiling away at a mind-numbing nine-to-five grind of a job, wondering when he'll ever have control over his own life. If not in this world, maybe the next?

Then, after a tragic accident, Ethan suddenly finds himself reincarnated in the land of Argwyll...as a hat. A hat that can possess creatures and steal their skills. Not too shabby—why evolve just one monster when you can upgrade skills from them all?

Stuck in this new world where monsters and hybrids are routinely hunted down and slain, Ethan's got his work cut out for him—especially considering his System keeps painting a target on his back. Because he's not just a regular hat.

He's the Archon. The Lord of all Demons. The last best hope for monsterkind. And he won't stop until he's become the most OP demon the world's ever seen.

The first volume of the hit LitRPG adventure series—with more than 800,000 views on Royal Road—now available in paperback, ebook, and audiobook!

Tropes include: free will versus fate, everyman hero, and weak to strong.

This was pretty cool if maybe a bit predictable at times. I’m looking forward to the next release and will be continuing onwards.

Really neat

Not sure why the MC doesn’t use his main and most overpowered ability more often. Put hat on monster, take abilities. Just the options would be super helpful but it gets forgot pretty fast.Everyone just ignores Terra being a loud, annoying, and manipulative brat.

The book also has a white savior vibe with a twist. Where it focuses on the emotional journey and reaction of the MC to slavery and racism rather than the experiences of those subjected to it. There was some amnesia and/or disconnect over regarding the world he came from and its history.

I also thought having Terra be the center of an emotional reaction to the slavery discredited a lot of it due to her personality. She is stupid, entitled, dismissive, disrespectful, and insensitive. Just a liability overall. And not even a super vital one. Nothing about her is even that special given the setting.

And the biggest turning point in the story was a very obvious and avoidable mistake the MC makes. And he acts like a petulant child who won’t admit his mistake when it is pointed out. I don’t understand how someone who is supposed to have been such a diligent problem solver could be that simple minded.

When the world is looking for you, shooting up a metaphorical flare tends to be a stupid idea. And if you shoot one up, do it away from your secret base.

Also, the MC had a monotonous office job and pretends that was such a hard, unchangeable life. That he was trapped as the best employee and had no options. He treats it like it’s comparable to so many of the terrible things happening in a fantasy genocide. It wasn’t THAT bad. And you had options. It’s like if someone who played call of duty acted like they truly understood war: from killing, watching comrades die, to war crimes, and the people who it effects.

MC’s abilities
