Decent storytelling structure and narration.

Opinions on current events. Big business is evil. I listen to Science Fiction to escape not to understand Portland Oregon.

Twists and turns. Did not see the resolution coming.

I listened to the entire box set over a couple of months while driving to work each day. There is a change in main characters that I didn't like, but it is understandable for the series to flow. Kinda leaves you hanging on a couple of threads, but ties the main arc up rather nicely. If you can get the box set, do it, it is a good listened. It was very enjoyable. I'll likely listen again.

A thrilling epic SciFi series

TLDR: A very enjoyable read. Bartlett weaves real-world politics into action packed Sci-Fi, with space and mech combat. Excellent narration, as you can expect from Boyett. Recommended read, especially for 1 credit. Longer review below.

The Ixan Prophecies trilogy hooked me from the start with its blend of backstabbing, double-dealing, corruption, and military sci-fi theme. The trilogy delivers a gripping narrative centered on humanity’s dominance in a volatile galaxy. It poses the question: What does humanity do with its place atop the galactic food chain? Bartlett weaves real-world political parallels, such as bribery, unlimited campaign donations, and leaders’ thoughts (or lack thereof) on accountability for long-term consequences, into the narrative seamlessly, never feeling forced. It was interesting to follow Captain Keyes’ moral struggle throughout this trilogy as well.

Bartlett's Mech Wars puts itself in a challenging position by shifting focus to the villains from the previous book, making it difficult to muster sympathy for the characters. However, he maintains the high-stakes atmosphere, continuing the themes of backstabbing, espionage, and plotting from the Ixan Prophecies. The books excel in their stompy robot action and introduce a unique concept: using lucid dreaming for military training and piloting mechs. While I enjoyed the stories and found them engaging, there are a few issues with military terminology that I found distracting. Firstly, the use of "seaman apprentice" as a rank is inconsistent with the US Navy's actual hierarchy, and it's unlikely that someone at this rank would be trusted to pilot advanced mechs. Additionally, the term "nicknames" is used instead of "callsigns," which is the standard term used in the military. It's worth noting that a callsign like “Razor” would never be chosen for someone’s skill in battle; however, a person may earn a callsign like "Razor" due to a shaving accident before a promotion ceremony. Lastly, Bartlett occasionally mixes up the terms "clip" and "magazine," which might be distracting for readers familiar with firearms terminology. However, it's possible to assume that the corporate military in this fictional universe uses terms differently.

I previously read the Ixan Legacy Trilogy 5 years ago, and I remember enjoying it at the time. I re-read my review and commented about wanting to go back and read Mech Wars to figure out how we got there. Now that I’ve read the previous books, there are a lot of references and characters that I missed. I enjoyed re-listening to it, just as I enjoyed it 5 years ago. Bartlett continues the trend of weaving real-world politics into the trilogy, leaving Husher to walk a tightrope of balancing over the top political correctness and trying to fight a war. The story created interesting dilemmas of trying to balance the life of non-combat civilians while also needing to go into combat.

Mark Boyett’s narration of this series is exceptional, as always. He uses distinct voices and accents for each character to really bring the story to life.
