Twenty years ago, Jason was pulled into a world of magic and monsters.

He was promised a life of wandering his new home and having adventures, but things got out of hand pretty quickly. He met with kings and gods, fought interdimensional cults, and got in a knife fight with the guy who creates universes. He didn't win. What he'd never done was roam around, having nice, sensible adventures. He hadn't even seen the hometown of his friends, and that had been the first destination on his list.

Two decades on, he'd saved whole civilizations and the Earth, several times. He was freshly returned from a conflict with the fate of the cosmos at stake, where the battlefield was his soul and the combatants were the governing forces of reality. It was a fight he had no chance of winning, which was why he rigged it and pinched the prize while everyone was distracted.

Now, Jason is determined to reunite with his friends and have the simple adventuring life he always wanted. He won't let anyone get in his way, not angelic armies, scheming guilds, or the people who want to talk about that time he altered the fundamental laws of magic. Which isn't as bad as it sounds, he promises.

Jason's taking a gap year, whatever he has to do to make it happen. Manipulate a prestigious noble house into liberating a slave town. Attempt to extort every government on the planet. Blow up and subsequently rebuild the occasional city. Gods help anyone who tries to stop him, but the gods probably won't because they've met Jason and they know how that usually goes.

This book was too short, as are the other books. I enjoy how i can re-listen to this book series.

Loved the laughs.

I've long resisted the urge to leave a review on any of the great many audiobooks I've enjoyed over the years. Primarily, this is due to me not having much to say that wasn't already being said by countless others. But I've finally felt compelled to leave a review; naturally on an entry to one of my favorite series to date.

He Who Fights With Monsters is excellent. I know there are many out there that find Jason's character not to their liking. Often such people complain about Jason's fragile mental state or how other characters in the story respond to him. But I think those people miss the point. The story of HWFWM is a simple one. The main premise is in the name. It's a story about a person who has to face the iconic dilemma of facing monsters (and various other threats) and trying not to become the very thing he fights against. While nearly every installation has played off this premise to various degrees, I feel like this lasted book had done an excellent job of showing another side to this.

Book 12 shows us that Jason is CAPABLE of becoming something adjacent to that which he struggles against, while still remaining true to himself and those he cares about. This book is a story about compromise, acceptance and responsibility; and despite what others may say, I find that it was done very well. I've read every book multiple times, most recently knocking out all previous 11 entries back to back in preparation for the release of book 12. The part I appreciate most is that no character was really left out. We got to see old friends and new friends come together in a story that finally feels like two worlds coming together. I'm extremely excited to she how the story progresses from here. The only thing that upsets me while writing this, is the fact I'm I'll have to wait for the next entry. I loved this entry, even though it had far less "action" than previous titles. That's all right with me. I'm sure we'll get plenty more ridiculousness in the future, as ridiculous is very much kind of Jason's thing. I'm here for it, and I'll be waiting impatiently.

The recap written by stash and the first few chapters were perfect! the rest felt like a wrap up which makes me fear it's over ... hope to keep the story going it's great. His morals annoy the crap out of me but that what makes the book great, I don't agree with the choices but want to constantly know more.
