A fun and enjoyable sequel

It was nice to continue along the journey. The author builds upon the creative vernacular of the forst installment while weaving in spells of intrigue and conflict. Wonderfully read by Martin.

Good adult fantasy lit

Great for more adult themes not limited to in the bedroom but ideas and emotions as well. Don’t read these if you get attached to characters and hate when they move out of the picture or die! Even important characters… I normally don’t like books that do this as often as this series does as I like to keep reality’s hard lessons separate from my fantasy reading but this series does it in a way that while sad and aggravating it’s just like the rest of the adult ideas presented in the book, “Life happens and, either choices are taken from you or, you have to make tough choices.” This book embodies characters who make the tough choices. And everyone, even us readers, are left with the consequences whatever they may be. All around if you want a more dark and complicated magical world filled with revenge and heartache then this series is for you. Plus it’s just a pretty cool magical system. I’ve only seen similar systems in some Chinese novels.

this series has been good and honestly the drama and fights in this one is top notch.

Sloppy Progression

While there's quite a lot to like in this series, I never really understood the power system or what is causing increases in power or what those increases are or how they're effecting combat. Early in the last book, we had the promise of an overpowered main character who uses his unique spell form and alchemy to overcome some mana burn scarring, but after the fight in the zeppelin in which he saved everyone heroically, it has seemed like a walk-back on his powers that also happens to be vague. So magical arrows he forms out of his special crystal magic don't actually turn mobs to crystal or do they? He can used crystalline mana sometimes to freeze things and sometimes to make explosions of light (or just explosions) but not all the time and why not all the time?

Plus, there are sometimes things that either I missed or they come completely out of the blue like the character inventing a potion for male enhancement (no idea how it does that either). There are also a lot of irons in the fire and they seem to be abandoned for a while and then just picked up and accomplished or, worse, advanced a tiny bit and then put back down. Basically, I just felt the progression both narratively and in character growth felt sloppy and thus unsatisfying. Maybe better plotting would help, as I think the author wrote vaguely in an attempt to not paint himself into a wall and the result was a bit sloppy.

Honestly, it's still pretty good. It's okay. There's just a lot of stuff that's very good, great, or spectacular. If I'd rather reread a great series than listen to your pretty good one, then that's a problem. Still, pretty good can find an audience and I won't fault anyone for liking this. There's so much to like that I put off my issues for a long while.

What happens when an academy, a slice-of-life, and a delve have a chimera

Ohhhh man I loved this second book in the series. It's by J Pal and it's about a student learning to make his alchemic potions even more powerful and at the same time running a business making enough money to not only pay for his tuition but all the employees that he hired. With his family and a couple of backers fronting the business. All he has to do is pull off a miracle or two to grow the wealth. And of course delve deep into dungeons and rifts. Leveling up his skills along with his friends and with the help of Otis his gremlin familiar and a bunch of squirrels they delve deep, tackling monsters and bosses that they probably shouldn't take on... Oh and what goin-on with Bi Xi?
Go grab the audiobook Eric Jason Martin’s voice is perfect. Besides it's an academy book, I know you love those too! ❤

I love how mature and level headed mc is. Author keeps me guessing on what will happen next. Don't sleep on this amazing book!
