This is an academic work describing how the New Testament writers re-purpose Genesis 6:1-5 in their presentation of Jesus as messiah. Though every topic addressed in Reversing Hermon can be found in scholarly academic literature, Reversing Hermon is the first book to gather this information and make it accessible to Bible students everywhere. The book also includes lengthy appendices on the ancient debate on the inspiration of the book of 1 Enoch, New Testament allusions to the book, and academic resources for studying 1 Enoch and the Book of Giants from the Dead Sea Scrolls.

I enjoyed the work greatly but the book is written in a manner that would make it a very good college level exegetical study. The verbal inclusion of all of the examples and parallels made the process drag on a little too much.

Insightful but tedious

Very well read and engaging on a difficult work that can be confusing.
Also well written but the narrator brings work to life.
other works by Heiser by other narrators are dry and unwieldly.

Well read and engaging

The narrator was good, but the editing that should have made times that the narrator must have stopped for a few hours/days, then resumed reading are not seamless... something they should have been. This explains why some chapters sound as if narrator is reading inside a vacuum, and others are clear and concise. Perhaps it was left that way in the hopes that the listener would be startled enough to reevaluate what was heard previously, adding more interest...or it was simply too costly or time consuming to correct!!

Dr Heiser shows how Biblical writers utilized the books of Enoch and Jubilees in their narratives. They did this knowing that their 2nd Temple period audiences would understand why this was being done and acknowledging that the complexity of YaHshua/Jesus' mission was not ONLY death and resurrection for our sins and reconciliation with the Father, but also the Ultimate Triumph over the plans of the Watchers. Satan and the Watchers sought to corrupt all human DNA in order to prevent HIS Coming the first time and final & complete Victory Over HIS enemies while showing clearly that HE is Just and Justified at HIS 2nd Coming!! This is definitively shown in each encounter with demon spirits that HE sent out of humans, or into pigs/swine....attested to by the conversations these beings had with HIM during these confrontations. However, early church Fathers began to argue over the correct understanding of Gen 6 in regards to the Angels fornication with human women, producing Giant/Titan children. As these "children" died, because they were part human, their immortal souls became demonic spirits, thus adding to the army of Satan. These are they which "possess and/or influence" humans into partnership with them.

The book is scholarly in nature, using the well researched papers of more current Biblical scholars and lots of footnotes. It's like a "slight" dumbing down of PhD studies for a more mainstream audience to understand. That said, mostly only those who study the Word very intensely would be interested in what is written here in this way. Fortunately, there are a lot of us who do study like this, with more being added daily... HalleluYAH!!

Dr Heiser's book rips away 3 extremely false narratives:
#1) Sethite explanation of Genesis 6
#2) Idea that Antichrist will be a Jew coming primarily to fool other Jews in the last days, as taught by Dispensationalists. Instead, like Antiochus Ephiphanes and Nero, he will clearly be a gentile tyrant. Dr Heiser respects the fact that all of IsraEl was read the entire Torah out loud every 7 years (Deut31:10-13) from the time of Moses and the first Exodus during the Feast of Tabernacles/Sukkot. This was for the men, women, children and the foreigners among them ie Everybody. Torah scholars were to be among the crowd to answer any questions......and the Torah Portion readings done every week so that the entire Torah, Prophets and Writings are read completely through 1x a year, every year since the days of Daniel in Babylon through the present day.
#3) How often scholars influenced by belief systems that they want to see justified, will "read into" the text what it doesn't "actually" say and "totally ignore" texts that undeniably deny the validity of what these scholars want taught. Many people read books written in this dishonest/disengenuous way without knowing that there are Scriptures that tear these ideas apart. Dr Heiser would rather that ALL THE EVIDENCE be laid out for examination, respecting the individual right of each to learn, grow and understand for themselves without being swayed.

I totally agree. I believe that every single person should read the Bible out loud, from Genesis/Beresheit to Revelation, without a "teacher" or interpretive guide in any form except a Biblical map book and pad with pen for notes at least 1x in their life. 12 pages a day faithfully will take 90 days to finish it. Too many people are convinced that they could never understand the Bible alone without ever even trying it! Lol, once they do it, they'll know the falsity of that idea and will be alerted inside when someone is misreading/misinterpreting something....and have an idea of where to go to confirm or deny whatever they are being told. Amazing book, highly recommended.

This is a book that talks about things most people have never heard. It's pretty heavy but very good.
The narrator has an excellent voice, but sometimes his vocal inflections don't match the text very well. In fact, sometimes he inadvertently comes across as sarcastic.
Don't let that cause you to not go through this book, but if it bothers you, buy the book and read it instead. It's worth whatever it takes to get the information.

Great information but it can be heavy
