No longer playing as a Local from the world of Continue Online, Grant Legate’s adventure can begin. The Voices offer him a unique title along with a test and reward. To start—he'll have to survive underground horrors, old girlfriends, become a warrior. To win—he must become an imp familiar and kill another player, one with a dozen tricks up his sleeve.

That being said, the book is an interesting study in character. Can someone who loses everything important to them ever heal? Will they want to? Can the game help? Much like the first book, book two has a slow start, but the pace builds and rockets through to the end like a book on fire. Still, I can see how some people might see the MC as being wimpy or weak, or a cry baby. Depression is like a tidal wave that continually assaults the same beach over and over. No matter what you have, no matter what you do, it will crush and shatter everything in its path when it comes. I, for one, appreciate a suicidal protagonist who doesn't have a Doc Holliday mindset.
If you liked the first book then you will love the second. It pretty much plays out in a similar fashion, with the slow burn and build up into a great crescendo. If you didn't like Grant in the first book, you will absolutely hate him here. So don't expect a lot of growth from the cowardly lion. He finally gets to play the game, but not in a way he expects, and his reaction is pure Grant. If you loved him, you will now cherish him.
Pavi Proczko does an amazing job on the narration. Just as in the first book he really makes you feel everything that Grant does, you know his emotional state, and it hurst because there is nothing that you can do to help. He also nails the characters, the imp's summoner is fun, and he really does his best to make each PC in the book have their own voice and personality. He does a great job setting the tone, and the mood of each chapter.
I also LOVE the cover of this book. It looks creepy as all get out, and really catches your eye. You cannot unsee it, and the colors and tones really work with setting the story up. I don't know if I could pass upa book with this as its cover.
In spite of the perceived downer some people think Grant is, I think this is an incredible book, and it will stand out in your mind long after you read it. You will have hope that Grant's spirit will heal and that he will become a whole man once again. Even though I did receive a promo code for this review it in no way influenced my considerations of the material, and in fact, inspired me to be more honest. In fact, getting a code generally makes me harsher as a reviewer as I am more often concerned what someone like Me will decide based on my review.
