A Hilarious and Unconventional Romance!

Asher Black is not my typical read/listen. I actually don't think that I have ever read a mafia book/romance. I'm so happy that I took the chance though to discover this new to me author!

This was a really entertaining audiobook and the heroine had me laughing throughout most of the book. Lucy's inner monologue and her back and forth banter with Asher was fantastic. Throw in the whole fake fiance trope and this was an awesome debut novel. Even though there are some heavier and more serious moments in the book, Lucy and Asher's interactions and chemistry kept it more lighthearted and playful. Readers/listeners may find a few parts of the story a little over the top, but for me it just made it more fun. This is my first time listening to the narrator, Lacy Laurel. I thought that she did a great job as Lucy and I felt her performance was perfect for the character.

I didn't find the book to be super mafia heavy and though the overall pacing was fine, I felt like the end was a little rushed/abrupt. I would have loved to have an epilogue as well as Asher's POV, but overall, this was a really enjoyable book and I look forward to reading/listening to more by this author.

Hilarious and Hot

This audio was laugh out loud funny. The story of a young, very smart, attractive woman forced into a situation with an Alpha mobster due to her own actions. The internal ramblings of her mind quite often had me laughing out loud. I did find that if I was interrupted at all I would have to go back in the Audio because I wasn’t sure if she was speaking to herself or if she was in a two sided conversation. Asher Black was dark and brooding but he also was protective, intuitive, and sexy as sin. The narrator has a very distinct cadence to her voice which was distracting for me and did little to help the story. If you’re looking for a quick witted listen, this audio is for you.

Suspension of disbelief is helpful

A hitman has targeted a naïve college student who accidentally called the police? Her only way out is to pretend she’s his fiancée?

This is a creative if not slightly implausible plot. There are many Alpha-billionaire-fist fighting-mafia romances these days and, at times, it can be a little much. The question is – how can an author and book differentiate themselves from the pack?

Parker S. Huntington certainly tries. Lucy Ives is not a meek heroine. She’s survived a horrific childhood and has done charity work in foreign countries before entering college in New York as a sophomore. She’s living in residence with another sophomore. Amy is tall, beautiful, and loyal.

The women go out to a nightclub and while Amy meets a cute guy, Lucy glimpses the most beautiful man she’s ever seen. Cue hot meet-up, misunderstandings galore, and a college co-ed now believing the mafia is going to send a hitman to kill her.

It sounds a little over-the-top, but it isn’t written that way. Lucy is a relatable character and Asher Black, the 25-year-old billionaire who is involved in the mafia, has more depth than I might have anticipated.

As I try to summarize both the book and my feelings about it, I am myself conflicted. I enjoyed the book but it was, at time, really over the top. And because I didn’t take the book seriously, I enjoyed it. Strange but true.

I like Lucy because she’s feisty and refuses to be walked over. She stands up for what’s right and is loyal. She even intervenes so no harm comes to someone she really dislikes.

Lacy Laurel is the narrator and she is improving with every book she narrates. If she does the next book in the series, I will probably listen. My only true complaint is her French. I understand it is challenging to speak another language, but this was incomprehensible. Fortunately, there were just a few lines, which are translated in the story.

Despite how unrealistic this book was, the secondary characters who are to be the main couple in the next book are intriguing to me and I want to discover out how they navigate this shady (and insane) world.

I need more!

This book was awesome! It had me hooked from the beginning. I could not put it down. The story was so well written. I fell in love with the characters and became so invested. The chemistry between Lucy and Asher was crazy. I was yelling at them in my head so often. Lucy is perfect for Asher- they just need to get their S together. I can not wait for the next installment!

Narration and production is flawless. I have had the pleasure of listening to several of Lacy's narrations and have loved them all. She always gives a great performance!

Highly recommend!

Asher Black

This story was a fun and quick listen for me. The overall story line was a mixture of fun, action packed, & romance. Lucy’s roommate is rather fun, and sometimes annoying. But she is the first real friend Lucy has ever had. Asher doesn’t really have anyone either and that really pulls them together. I will be honest to me the best part of the story was the last couple of hours of listening, that is when the main action is happening. The book does have a bit of humor as well! The narration was very nice and easy to listen to.

I must be honest on this part though the blurb was a bit misleading to me. I never felt Lucy was in danger form Asher. And I was expecting way more mob ties throughout the story but their is very little mob action in this story.

Amazing!

Parker S Huntington has written and amazing story and the narration by Lacy Lauren just made it that much better! This is not your typical mafia romance book. It has some tension and angst in the beginning but with a few times that you will giggle yourself silly. You can see the way this relationship grows from beginning to end with no parts skipped. I love the way it started, the way it continued and the way it ended. There is no part in this book that is not loved and you will not regret getting this audiobook to listen to. I myself can’t wait for the next!

very funny and unique

I've now read the book and listened to the audible narration and since I already liked the book A LOT- it was quite fun to listen and hear Lucy's inner rambling said aloud. the story has some typical romantic tropes but I felt they were introduced in a new way that made the story feel new and unique and seriously I laughed out loud quite often. The narrator was new to me and she has a unusual cadence and speech pattern that took a little while for me to get used to but eventually that went away and I was just happy to listen to the story. I think that Lucy and Asher have a great story and I recommend both the book and audiobook.

I love Lucy!

This book kept me hooked from the intrigue, twists and turns, romps, harshness, tenderness, betrayals and courage. The characters were well written and the whole thing brought to life by the fantastic characterisation of Lacy Laurels voice! I think this would make a great movie! (Well it did! In my head!)
I was hooked and I love Lucy and Asher Black!

Asher and Lucy... dynamite duo

Lucy is a college student with great looks and greater brains. She meets Asher Black in one of his businesses. He is from the mafia so his reputation precedes him. Little does she know a 911 call would upend her neat little world. When Asher wants Asher gets and Lucy is what he wants. The book is entertaining, sometimes unbelievable with all the money and power he has in his 20’s. There’s lots of action, angst and full of drama. The burn is slow and swoon worthy.
Asher’s voice was too nasal and that threw me off but the narration was good.

Delicious!

This book was so deliciously captivating. I was wrapped up in it from the get go. Lucy is a character you can't help but love. Her internal rants are so perfect, and hilarious. We all do it. It just made her more real. Asher Black, oh my! He is an enigma. The perfect balance of bad and good. Can she overlook his past, and get over hers, to let them have a future?

The narrator, wonderful! She does a perfect voice change for every character, male included. My favorite, when she read Amy's text messages to Lucy. It was hillarious.

Asher! yes please!

This was a great start to a series, from an author who is new to me. Loved learning about the enigmatic Asher Black through the eyes of the feisty and entertaining Lucy! I enjoyed the story;it had great pace and enough detail to keep me listening. I had a few issues with what, overall, was good narration, as I found it rather fast and not always clear.

Amazing

I loved Asher Black! The book and the character LOL.

The book is well written, and it is fast paced that you won't get bored at any minute.

The characters are great and I liked how their relationship starts developing throughout the book and that it is wasn't rushed or forced, how they both Lucy and Asher were what each other needed and they didn't even know it at first.

Asher is amazing, caring, protective and loyal. Lucy is also a great character, she is strong, loyal, determined, and I loved how she grows and starts gaining more confidence and power.

Lucy's friend Amy was so hilarious, I couldn't believe all the things that came out of her mouth, they have me laughing so much, she was a great addition to the story.

The narrattion by Lacy Laurel was perfect, her voice was perfect for all the characters, that you could identify who was speaking, all her voices so perfect.

Whew! This book is so delicious and so good. Ok Asher Black has earned him a seat up there with Christian Grey and Gideon Cross for me! The story was excellent the characters drew me in and Lacy Laurel did an excellent job of bringing this story to life for me. I had my headphones on to keep listening even when the kids came home from school. This was a GREAT book. I can't wait to get my hands on book 2!

An entertaining slow burn romance

Asher and Lucy meet the first night that she is in New York and it's insta-lust for them both. Through a series of events, Asher finds Lucy a month after their first meeting and she eventually agrees to be his fake fiance to help him maintain control of his company. After that, there is no shortage of drama, action, and intrigue. This is a slow burn romance and the MCs don't give into their attraction until around the 80% mark in the book. This book is a single POV and the narrator does a really good job performing the book. She gave an energetic performance and did a great job of inflecting emotion into her voice while reading. There were some things that I heard during the audiobook that were briefly annoying to me, but it didn't significantly affect my enjoyment of the audiobook overall. There were also some instances that the author repeated a sentence 3 times while Lucy was processing something that another person had said or convincing herself of something (ex: "This isn't real. This isn't real. This isn't real."). Since this book was a single POV (Lucy's), I felt like I didn't get to know Asher that well and that he was more of a secondary character than one of the MCs. I would have loved for there to have been a few chapters in Asher's POV to help me feel a little more connected to him. I expected this book to be a pretty serious, dramatic story since Asher was a fixer for the mob. But I was pleasantly surprised to see that it wasn't overly serious and that there were several times that I found myself giggling or laughing because of something Lucy said or thought. Overall, the storyline kept me interested, invested, and eager to see how Asher and Lucy's story was going to end. I'm looking forward to reading/listening to the other books in this series.
