It began on New Year’s Eve. The sickness came on suddenly, and spread quickly. The fear spread even faster. Within weeks, everything people counted on began to fail them. The electrical grid sputtered; law and government collapsed - and more than half of the world’s population was decimated. Where there had been order, there was now chaos. And as the power of science and technology receded, magick rose up in its place.

Story
For dinosaurs, it was a big rock. For humans: Coronal Mass Ejection (CME). When the Earth is hit by the greatest CME in recorded history (several times larger than the Carrington Event of 1859), the combined societies of the planet's most developed nations struggle to adapt to a life thrust back into the Dark Ages. In the United States, the military scrambles to speed the nation's recovery on multiple fronts including putting down riots, establishing relief camps, delivering medical aid, and bringing communication and travel back on line. Just as a real foothold is established in retaking the skies (utilizing existing commercial aircraft supplemented by military resources and ground control systems), a mysterious virus takes hold of the population, spreading globally over the very flight routes that the survivors fought so hard to rebuild.

Publisher's Summary
Cassie Forrest could almost believe life at Kingdom Come Farm is perfect, with Adrian and her friends at her side and spring on the way. The spring thaw also means millions of defrosting zombies, however, and if the past year has taught her anything, it's that life in this new world is highly imperfect.
When Safe Zones throughout the country begin to disappear and the zombies at the fences grow in number, Cassie clings to the hope that if she has the people she loves most, it will be all right. But the highly imperfect world makes only one guarantee - zombies never die, never stop, and are never satiated.

Let me start by saying that I was on the end of my seat listening to this one! I had to stop my audiobook to do a family thing and it was right at THAT scene and I spent the entire day thinking about these characters, I felt like I left them in the middle of a big thing and they were stuck fighting until I came back lol. I couldn't believe the direction this story took and was a little upset about it at first but I know it made this more realistic because of it. Great book! Can't wait to start book 3!
Julia Whelan was amazing as always!

Abysmal Disappointment!
I enjoyed Fleming's first novel in this series, and I was glad the reviews were accurate.
This second book is bad storytelling in so many ways that I began to think she must have had help with the first one.
First, the vast majority of the book is a teen romance written in the most adolescent "who likes who?" language.
Second, any plot progression that does occur results from stupidity.
Third, she kills off many of the characters you invested in through the first book without any continued character development. They made it through the first book, but here they tease each other like 12-year-olds for an hour, and suddenly they're dead for no satisfactory reason.
Avoid this book. It's not any good.

FABULOUS LISTEN!
I listened to both books and the novella non stop, I couldn't put it away..... There is times when it seems like it's going to be boring and all doom and gloom but Fleming's throws another twist into it and bam a new direction is established. I can tell you that this book brought times of tears running down my face from the intensity of the characters emotions, but it also had me laughing out loud or smiling too.....
Again, GREAT STORY + EXCELLENT NARRATION= FABULOUS LISTEN!!! Well worth the credit!!

Middle Book Syndrome
This book suffers from all the problems that always affect middle books in trilogies; there's plenty going on and lots of stuff happening but almost none of it feels important. When you get to the end of this book and what you knew had to happen has finally happened, you know you've pushed through to the climax of the story. So, all the stuff that you want to see, the questions you want answered, and the things you want to know, should be in the next book... Here's hoping.

Super Boring
Any additional comments?
I loved books 1 & 1.5. I loved the characters and their stories. This book though, it's just blah. I could sum up the entire book in 5 sentences and the reader could go directly to book 3 and be completely caught up.
How did people manage to survive at Kingdom Come without this group of friends? No one else can fight the zombies. No one can patrol. No one can go on supply runs. Anytime someone has to go out of the fence, it's a handful of the main characters. There's an important death, but I was glad. This character was annoying perfect, which made me glad when they died.
The writing goes like this: Love story, love story, love story.......oh let's just go out of the fence for no particular reason, one or 2 people get eaten by zombies........love story, love story, love story........oh, you need more fuel? let's go out of the fence. Woops, we were careless and hit a ditch, causing another person to get eaten........love story, love story, love story.........let's go visit another safe zone and go pitch a tent out in the middle of nowhere, and then be shocked when we wake up in the middle of a field of zombies..........Another safe zone got overrun by zombies and none of the hundred or so survivors, including soldiers, can remove the dead bodies, so let's go over and do it for them, making sure to get one or 2 of us eaten along the way. The scenario really does repeat itself throughout the ENTIRE book. Super boring and predictable.
It picked up pace at the very end. So I'll continue with the series, considering there's only 1 book left. But I'm pretty sure how it's going to go. The next love story is pretty predictable.

Prepare. There will be tears and anger and probably many times when you wish you had stopped after the first novel, if you're anything like myself. But the story and the emotions are so real it's really amazing it's a work a fiction. Standing ovation for Fleming, even if I hate her a little.

Gripping
I really enjoyed the first book; the second (this one) was even better. I sat in my car for ten minutes after arriving at work this morning because I couldn't stop listening until I heard how one scene turned out. laughs, tears, Hopes and fears all tied together with a great story. It's going to be a long two weeks waiting for my next credit, although if it hadn't been for the freebie (So Long Lollipops) I probably would never have chosen this series.

spoiler alert *************
I'm now at the end of book 2 and now contemplating whether or not to read book 3. the writing is wonderful, the narration is perfect and the story is great. But, there is so many key characters that get killed off? I really don't understand why. as a reader/listener you become invested and fond of these key characters, you slower get to know them and understand them and learn to love them, and then, they are killed off! I really do not understand it. you then have to start all over again getting to know new characters. I was really upset when Hanna, Dan, john was killed off.
so I give this 4/5 it would have deserved twice as much but its put me off of reading book 3 incase anymore characters you grow to love get killed off.

Much Better Than The City Series
Julia Whelan is a good narrator- she gets better with the male voices as the novel goes on.
Unlike the City series, this is a better blend of action and domesticity, but the fact that most people don't act to protect themselves is unrealistic, as is the insistence on treating under-18s as children. In the event of a zombie apocalypse, everyone except toddlers and babies would be working and learning how to survive! Similarly, no one would be babysitting Bits and tolerating temper tantrums!
On a related note, I am not sure why everyone is planting and canning when they know huge herds are sweeping northwards!
Apart from these quibbles, the willingness to kill off major characters makes a welcome change from similar novels. Cassie is also a more developed and sympathetic character than Eric and Sylvie in the City series. Penny is whiny and pathetic but doesn't make many appearances in the main plot.
I am not expecting any major surprises in the last novel of the series, but am sufficiently invested to spend a credit!

Many things are done and not done, in this survival of the end of the world. Constantly I'm thinking they have this, but don't do anything with it... even when they dig a trench, I'm thinking they have 250 people and they are doing washing and canning and then they just abandon the food and gasoline they have risked their lives to get... Not the most logical of book trilogy's so far and again not one person considers going to a hydro dam or a mountain... If they had trained all those people a thousand would be nothing... Just saying.

Wonderful
Great performance by Julia Whelan. One of the best stories I’ve listened to. Thanks Sarah Lyons Fleming.

Great
Loved this one, although I thought the ‘male voices’ a tad annoying but the story line is fabulous.

Great series of books
Really love the way Fleming writes her characters. This series and the City series are amongst my all time favorites in this genre.
I listen while walking and this morning, I had tears streaming down my face, so embarrassing!

Zombie apocalypse win
Great book! I love anything zombie related, and this series really hits the mark for me. A little predictable at times. But fantastic characters and story, with enough blood and gore to keep me satisfied.

One of the best stories I've heard. Great narrator
A must! It isn't as gritty and gory as what I am used to, but the storytelling is amazing and the characters are all so loveable.

Too sad, but can’t put it down
Wow who else in Cass,s life can die? I am sucked into this book and want the next book to see what happens. Although I thought the first book was very sad and had to use many tissues, this one has also done the same. I usually only like books with happy endings, but I am hooked on this series.

Line!
Was Hooked! on the first one, this one is the line. Loving this trilogy, the characters are fantastic and the action is addictive. I enjoy the narration, but sometimes wish the male voices were narrated by a male voice - this is my only criticism.
