Amazing book, amateur narration grows on you
Love this book more than I can say. It's given me a different view on how to use my groceries wisely - how to rescue foods I miscooked, and use parts I usually toss, and cook more from instinct (Tamar's instinct!) rather than recipes. Though there are tons of recipes here - but she teaches rules of thumb as much as specific foods.
She also speaks about food in an infectiously glowing, enthusiastic way, like that person you know who initially seems kinda weirdly peppy but ends up winning you over completely and changing how you think of things. She ENTHUSES about food, and shows the glory of simple good food, made lovingly. She also shares food struggles and her periodic despairs about cooking, and it's all so relatable. She infuses the book with relevant quotes from philosophers - not in a showoff way, but with the delight of finding the exact right thought for the topic at hand, and it totally works.
The narration is offputting at first but grew on me. Tamar reads her own book, and the rhythm is incredible choppy. She pauses in odd places in the sentence like she's writing it as she goes instead of reading something that's been edited to a shine. The book is so great that it overcomes that, and Tamar's quiet enthusiasm comes through so strongly that I was won over again.

Amazing!
As a foodie writer and Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, I appreciated Tamar’s approach to food. I love her creativity, generosity, passion, sense of humor, incredible knowledge, and practical approach to using food more efficiently and creatively to experience it on a level that transcends our plates, palettes, and forks to an experience of community, gratitude, and love. This book has completely changed the way I see, think about, and appreciate food forever. Thank you so much for this masterpiece, I will use it anytime I need to be inspired to reimagine cooking.

Great audiobook of an essential cooking guide
I enjoyed the narration of this book because it’s not a conventional cookbook. It’s more of a guide for cooking in general and encourages anyone who cooks to use our ingredients in the most resourceful way possible. The author helps you see possibilities beyond a single recipe and gives you tips on salvaging cooking mistakes. I grew up with parents who relied on canned and frozen goods so I wasn’t taught to cook with economy. Cooking this way is more mindful and rewarding and will make you less tempted to reach for takeout.

If words were nourishment...
Tamar Adler reminded me of why I am drawn to cooking in primal urges, an abundance of love, and the desire to share. Her words on the page as read by her come to life in ways that brought me to tears, made me smile, and forced a few public outbursts of laughter... I cannot recommend this book enough... ❤️👊🤘

1st cookbook that actually taught me to cook
I loved the audiobook so much I bought a hardcopy, too. I have always considered myself a foodie and enjoyed cooking, but have struggled to meal plan, shop, and use up my groceries before they spoil. And since Covid hit, I have been blowing my budget on disappointing delivery. This book has changed everything for me. Tamar’s words and philosophy are both inspiring and accessible. She has awakened a joy, ease, creativity, confidence, and conscientiousness in my approach to cooking and life. Bottom line - I am saving money on food, eating better than ever, and having fun doing it.
