Publisher's summary

I’ve always used video games to get me through the hard times, especially throughout my mother’s terminal illness. Tasked as not only her caretaker but my little brother’s as well, I long to give them a better life and save my mother’s in the process. This is why, on the day of the Kingsman Online Regional Championships, my ranking in the horror shooter Dystopia is so important. But just when I think I have my ranked placement in the bag, a rolling blackout sweeps the city, leaving me not only devastated in the present but hopeless about the future.

However, it seems things are not completely lost.

When a strange man claiming to be from Kingsman Online arrives and offers me the chance of a lifetime, I can’t refuse it.

The gaming company promises a completely immersive experience for their players in the regional championships.

Little do I know, I’m falling straight into a trap.

A fun game-lit novel

I enjoyed this book. The story was unique within a game world the author designed. The narration was slightly muffled but professional and once you get into it's pretty immersive. The writing was a little clunky here and there and could've used more visuals rather than abstract similes but I liked the world and character development.

Alt Control Enter

This book has a great concept. Battle Royale has definitely grown in popularity lately and this book delivers the reader into just that. A Battle Royale setting known as the online gaming world of Dystopia. I personally would have liked more interaction between the players in the game and less of NPC characters, but the book is still a fun read. I'll be checking book two out to see the fate of the two main characters.

I received this audiobook in exchange for an honest review from the author/publisher/narrator.

great read

I received this book for free for a honest review. This storyline was well written and held together. Corrupt companies, teenagers, hope. This book has it all. The author did a fabulous job of bringing the characters to life . Reccomend

a good Hunger Games esque survival litrpg

I really enjoyed this Hunger Games Style litrpg.

it was enjoyable to not have OP main characters, and see the various ways they came up with to survive in the harsh game world. feeling definitely left you wanting to find out what happens in the next story

my only negative was the narrator. there was not much variation in her voice for the various characters in the story. I think was practice though, she has a good future in this.

A good read for the Young Adult crowd

This story was a bit young for me, but it's a great read for the young adult gamers out there. Interesting in premise, it's a fascinating story with a strong family centering it. I mostly enjoyed it, though I felt the reader had a bit of a flat style and could have added more emotion to the work.

Slow to start, when it gets going it's pretty good

I have read a lot of books and listened to even more. One thing I have heard about and have seen some instruction on is the use of descriptive phrases. If you ever need to teach about descriptive phrases this is the perfect textbook. The author says everything possible to let you know how he thinks the scene should look. It was very extremely outrageously overdone without seeming to be on purpose.
Once you get past the overly descriptive style of writing, the story is actually pretty good.

I am not familiar with the "Battle Royale" type of gaming but found this GameLit to be different than what I expected. I see one reviewer compared this story to "The Hunger Games" and I can certainly see the similarities in this battle to survive - last man standing type of game. One major thing that was different, at least in this version of Battle Royale, is that there were no levels or game stats presented at all in this story. When you enter a game, you expect to see stats and levels. When you leave the game and come back, you expect your current levels and learned skills to come with you. That was the most dis-concerting thing about the game experience in this story. When they went into the game, it was like these two kids were dropped unarmed and unskilled into a battle for survival even though one of them had earned this opportunity by her ranking in a prior gaming experience. Amazingly, their survival still came across as realistic. That's how good this story is.

No sexual content to worry about but there is certainly death of both monsters and people and although not overly graphic, it does still exist in this type of story. Squeamish kids beware.

Narration was decent if a bit flat. Did not really add to the story as some do but certainly did not detract from the story either.

Will be looking for the next story as this has an ending that requires a follow up and the story is certainly worth continuing. Most would call this a cliff-hanger ending but I don't think that really fits.

I was given this free review copy audio book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Engaging but choppy

This is a really good book but the author missed some key points. The adaptation to the situation was oversimplified. The arguments between the M.Cs were unimaginative. still a good story though.

Slow but worth it

So this story takes a fair while to really get going. However it was filled with drama and suspense light on the action side but remarkably well done.
