Publisher's Summary

The monkey mind chatters all day.

"I look terrible in these pants-why can't I lose some weight?"

"I'm stuck in traffic again. Why didn't I leave earlier?"

"If I wasn't working all the time, I could have saved my marriage."

This results in stress, shame, and ultimately, "Bartender, can I get a drink?"

Free yourself from the negative mind-set that overwhelms you. Addicted to the Monkey Mind offers a toolbox of practical skills to shift self-sabotaging, programmed ways of thinking and learn actionable steps.

This audiobook will help you to:

  • Overcome addiction
  • Resolve relationship issues
  • Replace burnout with passion
  • Sustain an abiding joy

J.F. Benoist - a visionary thought leader in the fields of addiction treatment and personal development - uses the journeys of two relatable characters to teach you how to develop a powerful new mind-set and finally break the cycle of debilitating habits.

Praise for the book:

"JF Benoist has given us a book of insight and clarity. Both psychotherapists and their clients will greatly benefit. I highly recommend this book." (Teni Garrett-Johnson, PhD, licensed clinical psychologist)

Painfully Bad, Mostly stories. Not Helpful.

First Half: In depth examples of specific people complaining about specific problems in their marriages or with anger.
"Why did you feel that way?" Parents at fault (Huge revelation for specific persons that somehow fixes their issues of alcoholism, anger, etc. ?).
Second Half: Use observing mind (mindfulness) rather than emotionally acting out. Still talking about parents being responsible for everything. Weirdly simply solving the example person's problem. Not at all realistic. People are miraculously cured by the author asking Why do you feel like that? Answer: My parents. Woah, my belief is flawed, I'm cured!
No helpful process on changing beliefs. Just to identify them and you're done. It's not that simple!

Worst parts: Narrator imitating children, other people sobbing or stuttering, and COMPLAINING (A surprising % of the book's content). Most of this is stories.

Key take away: Use your "Observing mind" rather than emotional reaction. That sums up the entire helpful aspect of the book without the many drawn out examples of specific people. ALL of this book can be covered more effectively by googling Wise Mind. A well known concept in various self help and CBT books. I want the last few hours of my life back. Don't waste yours.

My husband has issues.

This book makes me realise how many issues my husband has. I guess I can’t relate too much to the monkey mind of constantly being attacked at every situation. The book isn’t bad, I think it could be shorter, it seemed a little repetitive to me. I really felt like everything could’ve been summarised a little better instead of all of these individual stories but, maybe that helps other people. All in all it really concentrated on this little negative voice we all have inside our head and how to navigate it. I
don’t think everyone can relate to the navigation though because not everyone is willing enough recognise it or address it

Hard to Listen to

It was okay. kind of helpful. a little repetitive, but overall good I guess.
To be honest though, I had a REALLY hard time listening to the narrator's voice, particularly when she is imitating some of the author's clientele. AARG, so freaking annoying to listen to!!

Not my style of approach

The first chapter is a melodramatic wife having marital problems. I feels more like a soap opera than a psychiatric book.

Got a bit long—-good advice

I’ll admit this for difficult to finish. There were some stories that just kept going on and on and I didn’t see a point in them. Good advice but just. Got. So. Boring.

Great to be reawakened

Easy to listen to. Refreshed concepts that I knew but wasn’t using.
Has greatly helped me to regain some power, and has made me realise that I want to embark on some therapy sessions as I know that I’m still stuck.
I will re-listen to it too as I enjoyed listening and not having to read and I’m sure that I’ll get more out of it 2nd time around. Thank you
