An unique and intense tale following Elim Garak as he attempts to stitch the ravaged society of Cardassia back together.
For nearly a decade Garak has longed for just one thing—to go home. Exiled on a space station, surrounded by aliens who loathe and distrust him, going back to Cardassia has been Garak's one dream. Now, finally, he is home. But home is a world whose landscape is filled with death and destruction. Desperation and dust are constant companions and luxury is a glass of clean water and a warm place to sleep.
Ironically, it is a letter from one of the aliens on that space station, Dr. Julian Bashir, that inspires Garak to look at the fabric of his life. Elim Garak has been a student, a gardener, a spy, an exile, a tailor, even a liberator. It is a life that was charted by the forces of Cardassian society with very little understanding of the person, and even less compassion.
But it is the tailor that understands who Elim Garak was, and what he could be. It is the tailor who sees the ruined fabric of Cardassia, and who knows how to bring this ravaged society back together. This is strange, because a tailor is the one thing Garak never wanted to be. But it is the tailor whom both Cardassia and Elim Garak need. It is the tailor who can put the pieces together, who can take a stitch in time.

It's wonderful to hear you as Garak again.
This is one of my favorite Star Trek novels of all time.
It's a wonderful examination of Cardassia and Garak written and now also read by the actor himself, Andrew J. Robinson.
It's a worthwhile read/listen for any Trek fan.
Thank You Andy!!!

Fantastic

This book does a wonderful job of picking up where that left off, the grim reality of a near total genocide, a world left in ruin. The flashbacks timed with the current setting did a great job of pacing for the story.
Andrew Robinson not only gave us this gift but added to it by another performance as my favorite character from DS9, as only he could.
Will be rereading again!
Such a rewarding experience

Stunning character work and performance

The lack of jargon and smooth and creative swings between the wicked and humane reflection.

I will say that if you haven’t seen Deep Space 9, this book probably isn’t for you. Not because it’s fan service, but because the delicate threads of the book (see what I did there?) are most meaningful when you understand the character and his on-screen portrayal.
Lovely book

I bought it digitally in hopes of squashing that first hurdle. Alas, I still didn’t read it.
Then the audiobook. You got me. Hearing the author reading the tale he’s written about the character he played…as his character! Priceless!
It truly was like getting a bonus episode of Deep Space Nine. I am grateful that I waited this long to hear the tale. As told by plain, simple Garak in his own words!
I’ve waited a long time for this!
