Given magical powers through a wish by a jinn, Henry Tsien was thrown into a hidden supernatural world. Forced to battle his own faulty, pop-culture-driven assumptions, as well as shadowy supernatural organizations while leveling up, Henry found an ally in Alexa Dumough, the Knights Templar initiate.

But that alliance is now threatened as Alexa is forced to take the Knights Templar’s test to become a squire. Together, the pair must face numerous trials that will test their patience, skills, and magic. All the while, Alexa must consider if becoming a squire for the Knights Templar is truly what she wishes for.

The Hidden Wishes series is an urban fantasy GameLit series with a game-like user interface, magic, the supernatural, kickass women, and shadowy supernatural organizations. No harems involved.

I follow this series and all the other ones I can get my hands on. He's a excellent author and I really dig this book. Thanks to Patrick Zeller for a fantastic job narrating.

Tao Wong, thanks for deciding to become a writer.

This is a fun and engaging listen with the standard urban fantasy premise that the supernatural is real and hidden from mundane humans, but with the twist that one person gets a wish that makes him a mage/wizard with role playing game levels and abilities suddenly thrown into a world he only imagined. This story focuses fulfilling a mission for one of his companions, a modern squire to the secretive Knight's Templar. The characters are relatable for what they are and make understandable decisions and mistakes given their worldviews and history. A fun short listen.

Different book, same good result. I really like the characters and the world the author has built. The narrator is perfect for this book too. Wish (haha!) they weren't so short, but otherwise, I recommend this series and am looking forward to the next entry.

Just as good as the first

This is the problem with 6 hour installments. The first “book” in the series really managed to pull you in, and while it would have absolutely benefitted from being a full length book, the short format didn’t leave you feeling like you only got half of the story.

This second installment did. Though the events kept me listening and the writing was executed well, this book really didn’t do much to pull you further into the story. It felt like the first half of a book where you are entertained, but the characters are more or less just doing their thing.... and you know that all the really good stuff is going to happen in the second half. Except this book ends right before that second half would have begun.

In the end, this was overpriced for what it was. Spending a whole credit on half a book is not a great feeling. I hope that the author either drops the short installment format or starts releasing omnibus editions. This book was enjoyable, but I felt like it was more of an episode than the next book in a series. Which would be fine if I could buy it for $7 or $8.

It was good, but not great.
