Story
In the beginning, the gods destroyed the world. Five hundred years later, things haven’t gotten much better for humans. The demigods that were left behind to guard over humanity have been using them as fodder for an endless civil war between themselves, and the humans just go on dutifully slaughtering each other, battle after battle. It’s not all bad, though. Perry McGown makes his living off those bloody, stinking battlefields. He works on a crew that reclaims all the spent shell casings. But if anyone found out that he was a deserter from the war, he’d be executed for heresy.

EOTWAWKI or prepper fans will like...
There are lots of books coming out in this genre lately and quite a few haven't been worth the time to listen... This one although the writing style isn't the best... was well worth my time and $. It follows a family who is scattered around the country, but has a prepper dad who they all thought was crazy.
There are some very creative and new to me solutions for EOTWAWKI problems. There is a lot of teaching from father to children, allowing us to learn his prepper ideas, theories and beliefs while reading. This is not a classic everyone would love to read like "Alas Babylon" or "One Second After." It doesn't include model numbers like the "Patriots" series. Those living in Texas would particularly like this book. There are no zombies or science fiction. Lots of violence, clean language, nice Christian family making hard choices... it got better as went along. A few hard to believe passages...
It is a part of a series, but this is stand alone if desired. The second book presents entirely different ideas and theories for a son traveling cross country alone. It was also well worth the read. At this writing the 3rd isn't out yet or I would be reading it now. Narrator was irritating at first with multiple accents really grating on my nerves, but he seemed to relax or do better as the book progressed... at least I didn't notice as much. I will probably read again.

Prepper training parable
If you could sum up A Distant Eden: Volume 1 in three words, what would they be?
Always be prepared

Adrian because he's a bad ass.
Have you listened to any of Michael Hacker’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
This is my first listen of any of Mr. Hacker's books.

Yes.

Technical problems with production?
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes. A compelling story packed with useful information.
What did you like best about this story?
The thoughtfulness and planning for survival.
Would you be willing to try another one of Michael Hacker’s performances?
First of all, there seems to have been problems during production that resulted in a tinny quality to the sound, right from the beginning. There are also faint sounds in the background, which as difficulty to ignore!
I was distracted the reader's accent and tone. Would have enjoyed the story more with a different reader -- and with better sound quality!
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No. It's easier to digest in small pieces.
Any additional comments?
Please clean up the recording's technical problems and re-release. Thank you!

Good story and guide
This book was billed as an instruction manual in the form of a story. It did a decent job of that. The story revolved around a TX man and his family and friends. He had been preparing for a disaster for years and when Earth was hit by Solar Discharge he was prepared to act. He had prepared his family even though they did not take it as seriously as he did. He also had a friend who was prepared for such and event as well even if their plans were different. The book pointed out that you must take actions that normally would be objectionable if you are to survive. Roman returns home using his car that he had set aside protected components for and his children and their family manage to get to their place and hunker down and wait till the worst is over before going to meet Roman and his wife. The story is in segments describing what happens to various members of the family and how they react. It is a good story and a good narrator. Enjoyable listen all around. This book was provided free of charge with the expectation of an honest review.

Disheartening
I honestly don't know if the author truly believes the nonsense that was typed across his page, but this story is chock full of sociopathic behavior. Roman is an insane man with a silver tongue and a loving family who stands behind his every action 100%. Alfred is a murder plan and simple, no matter how the author tries to justify his actions. No one seems to feel guilt or remorse, the extreme disregard for life in this book is atrocious and disheartening. When I read or listen to books like this I don't fear the masses so much as I do the supposed prepper who believes that killing men, women AND children first is the way to go.

Bloodbath
Has A Distant Eden: Volume 1 turned you off from other books in this genre?
The main characters kill anyone and everyone they run into. They rationalized the killing of everyone by saying that no matter their intention they ultimately were a threat to survival and therefore must die. It was laughable how they rationalized it every time and the whole group always agreed. I am a fan of the prepper genre but this is just crazy. I would be scared to live next to this author if the grid went down. He had a simple solution to survival: if you don't agree with me or you do things differently or you are just trying to take care of your family, you must die. Please don't use this as a survival manual.
