Sure, you can learn English with a language course or a textbook just fine, and climb up the ranks in terms of your grasp of the language....but are you sure you can talk like a native? For starters, many expressions used by fluent speakers of English can’t exactly be learned in a book, and it can be frustrating to realize that your formal learning hasn’t been enough to teach you the way people talk in real life. Sometimes, it’s all about having the right tools at your disposal...and this is where The Great Book of American Idioms comes in!

Story
After years of teaching intermediate students who never seemed to improve, I decided to find out what the problem was. Essentially, intermediate students get stuck because learning at this stage is a different type of learning than at the beginner stage. You have mastered the grammar and the basic vocabulary, but most textbooks just carry on like nothing has changed. However, what you need at the intermediate stage is not just more dry grammar and lists of vocabulary.

Publisher's Summary
A Bigger Vocabulary = A Brighter Future
Words. They're the foundation of nearly everything of value in our world. They have the power to create and the power to destroy. The power to inspire and to terrify. The power to enlighten and also to obscure. And, more specifically for you, they have the power to attract wealth and success and guarantee your brighter future. This is not hyperbole - it is based on rock-solid research.
Studies show that those people with large vocabularies are smarter, wealthier, and happier than the average person - and substantially so. And here's the best news of all: a large vocabulary is not tied to your social status, your genes, or even your education level. It is a skill that can be learned - and it takes only 30 days.
In this cutting-edge program, 30 Days to a More Powerful Vocabulary, personal development expert and English enthusiast Dan Strutzel will instruct, enlighten, and inspire you with a concentrated 30-day program that will teach you over 500 words. But, more than teaching you these words, the uniquely designed morning and evening review sessions will ensure that these words become a habit-knit part of your life - and with minimal effort on your part.
Best of all, research shows that learning new words has an exponential effect on the size of your vocabulary - since learning one word naturally produces an association between two to three more words. In short, after listening to and applying the system in this 30-day program, you will not only have a bigger vocabulary - you will have a brighter future!
Here's just a sampling of what you'll learn:
- The 10 myths about building a dynamic vocabulary
- The secret behind the exponential effect of vocabulary building
- A 30-day program designed to maximize learning and comprehension of over 500 words
- The words you need to know about money and financial issues
- The words you need to know about persuading others
- The words you need to know about marriage, parenting, and other relationships
- The words you need to know about science
- The words you need to know to be a great conversationalist
- Why building a large, dynamic vocabulary is even more valuable in the digital age
- And much more!

I expected different benefits from the book
personally, I find the first part the most interesting, mainly the part describing benefits and advantageous of vast vocabulary and part comparing job positions with regard to a vocabulary width of people exercising the job. However, the rest of the book did not give me much new knowledge or language learning know-how with regard to the books price.
With focus on the price, I do not recommend the book to people who are not at vocabulary level C2 at minimum.

Didn't learn much
The first two chapters are completely pointless. The author spends time trying to convince us to listen to the program. Then we he finally gets into it, he goes to fast for some of the words which I have never heard before. They don't stick in my mind this way. He does a review which is also fast and is supposed to work with our subconscious in the morning and before bed, which I don't think helped me learn the words better. Testing the listener or using words in context would have been more effective

Not bad but not what I expected
If you are looking to expand your vocabulary, I think you might like this book but you might find that you already know most of these words. These are mostly words that you already know but they give a very clear definition of the word in case you weren't 100% sure of the meaning. I am a person who did not finish college but I knew most of theses words already. This is probably a great book for kids.

The book is rather shallow and pedantic.
Words given in this book are so basic, it given as simple list with definition, most of the time the definition is way more sophisticated then the word. author doesn't try to teach how you can utilize the words in your everyday life only the boring list of the words. not better take the oxford dictionary and grab some random words and use them with same success. Ones again you won't get anything without adequate afford. As a conclusion the book is simply waist of time and money. everything above is my personal point of view totally subjective and won't reflect the other person's standpoint

Too basic for average education level
I found 95% of the words were very known to me already - and I never went to uni. I do have a reasonable IQ but I’m average intelligence and thought this was too basic.
The first chapter also heavily emphasises how much more money one can earn by expanding their vocabulary - I found this very off putting. Rather than listening to the whole book, I’ve now downloaded the list of words that comes with it and will just pick the 5% unknown to me and learn them through my own methods - it would be too tedious to listen to them all.

WOW
So, every second day you listen to the morning review & nightly review sessions from the previous days session.
So easy to listen to & I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to improve their vocabulary for personal growth.
For global learners I recommend listening to the intro & then the absolute last recording & then start from the beginning:)
All the best
