An empire in flames. A prisoner of war. An unbreakable will to escape.

At just 15, Eskara Helsene fought in the greatest war mankind has ever known—and lost. There is only one place her enemies would send a Sourcerer as powerful as her: the Pit, a prison sunk so deep into the earth the sun is a distant memory. Now, she finds herself stripped of her magic; a young girl surrounded by thieves, murderers, and worse. In order to survive she will need to make new allies, play the inmates against each other, and find a way out.

Her enemies will soon find out that Eskara is not so easily broken.

I really enjoyed this book. It was entertaining, fast paced, and had a really interesting magic system. It did get a bit repetitive and some of the narrative intersections into the story were unnecessary in my opinion. I can't wait to continue the series though!

The writer has woven a tale that captivated me from the start. I listen to audio books while I commute. This is a story that has caused me to sit in my car after I get to my destination just to keep listening to what's about to happen next.

The main character is telling her our story and the descriptive scenes and her recollections are so smoothly told that I felt immersed into the story.

Masterful Storytelling

While I found the story interesting, the lead character perplexed me. I have never read a book rooting against the main character more than in this book. Her character is dark, impulsive, and flawed in many ways leading me wishing her friends to run away before she does them dirty. With her hinting about the pain she brings down on the world in the future, it doesn't sound like redemption is in the cards.
Overall a solid book and I'm sure others will will enjoy the main character more than myself.

I love the narrator and her presentation, but the over meat of the story was lost on me. May or may not continue the series.
