Publisher's summary

Amelia Matthew has done the all-but-impossible, especially for an orphan in Gilded Age New York City. Along with her foster brother Jonas, she has parlayed her modest psychic talent into a safe and comfortable life. But safety and comfort vanish when a head injury leaves her with a dramatically-expanded gift.

After she publicly channels an angry spirit, she finds herself imprisoned in the notorious insane asylum on Blackwell’s Island. As Jonas searches for a way to free her, Amelia struggles to control her disturbing new abilities and survive a place where cruelty and despair threaten her sanity. Andrew Cavanaugh is familiar with despair. In the wake of a devastating loss, he abandons a promising medical career - and his place in Philadelphia society - to devote himself to the study and treatment of mental disease. Miss Amelia Matthew is just another patient - until she channels a spirit in front of him and proves her gift is real.

When a distraught mother comes to Andrew searching for her missing daughter - a daughter she believes is being hidden at the asylum - he turns to Amelia. Together, they uncover evidence of a deadly conspiracy, and then it’s no longer just Amelia’s sanity and freedom at stake. Amelia must master her gift and use it to catch a killer - or risk becoming the next victim.

Stellar Narration of a Riveting Story!

I usually don’t listen to audio books, but Eryn O’Sullivan’s narration had me hooked from the start. She navigated the various characters, accents, and points of view impeccably.

Stacie Murphy’s mystery unfolds with perfect pacing, and I fell in love with the characters she wrote. O’ Sullivan’s narration skills paired with Murphy’s writing is a match made in heaven. I can’t wait to hear the next one! Not to be missed!

Couldn’t turn it off!

I loved this book; both the story and the performance was great! It had mystery mixed with the supernatural; a great combination! I can’t wait for the next book in the series!

Enjoyable historical paranormal mystery

The writing is atmospheric and lovely. The narrator is great. The historical aspects of how both mental health and women were treated during this time were well done (and horrifying/heartbreaking). The paranormal element wove its way seamlessly into the story. All that said, there was very little sense of dread or suspense. There were harrowing situations, sure, but I never felt particularly worried for anyone (except for one character toward the end!). The mystery is more vaguely interesting than nail-biting. So all in all, it was entertaining but was missing that extra umph. It was easy to walk away, though I enjoyed my time with it when I returned.

Surprisingly Good!

I love historical fiction but am not a huge fan of supernatural themes. I listened to this book because I am acquainted with the author but I did not have high expectations. Wow, was I surprised! This is a gripping story that kept me wanting to make more time to listen. It's really a good historical tale set in a women's asylum in New York City when women were often at the mercy of their husbands. Although there is a supernatural element to the story, it is not the theme and it only a small part of the story - small enough to be entirely believable. I can say that I enthusiastically recommend this book! Can't wait for the next one.
