才気にあふれ、世話好きな性格は周りの人々を惹きつけ、たくさん悩みながらもよく笑い、よくしゃべる人だったそうです。
そんな芥川は、東京帝国大学に入学した翌年、高校の同級だった久米正雄らと共に第三次「新思潮」を創刊し、小説や翻訳を発表しました。
次いで第四次「新思潮」を創刊の際に掲載した『鼻』が夏目漱石に認められ、文壇に登ることとなりました。
その後新聞社に入社し、記者としてではなく専業作家として意欲的に執筆活動を続けました。
芥川は、漱石や森鴎外から文体や表現の影響を受けたり、キリシタンもの、江戸を舞台にしたものなど題材に応じて文体を変えたりと、意識的な小説の書き方をしていました。
また、鈴木三重吉により創刊された児童雑誌「赤い鳥」には、初となる童話作品『蜘蛛の糸』を発表、その後も同雑誌を中心に童話作品を相次いで発表し、幅広く作品を世に残しています。
ある時雨の降る晩のことです。私を乗せた人力車は、何度も大森界隈の険しい坂を上ったり下りたりして、やっと竹藪に囲まれた、小さな西洋館の前に梶棒を下しました。もう鼠色のペンキの剥げかかった、狭苦しい玄関には、車夫の出した提灯の明りで見ると、印度人マティラム・ミスラと日本字で書いた、これだけは新しい、瀬戸物の標札がかかっています。
マティラム・ミスラ君と云えば、もう皆さんの中にも、御存じの方が少くないかも知れません。ミスラ君は永年印度の独立を計っているカルカッタ生れの愛国者で、同時にまたハッサン・カンという名高い婆羅門の秘法を学んだ、年の若い魔術の大家なのです。私はちょうど一月ばかり以前から、ある友人の紹介でミスラ君と交際していましたが、政治経済の問題などはいろいろ議論したことがあっても、肝腎の魔術を使う時には、まだ一度も居合せたことがありません。そこで今夜は前以て、魔術を使って見せてくれるように、手紙で頼んで置いてから、当時ミスラ君の住んでいた、寂しい大森の町はずれまで、人力車を急がせて来たのです……
