漢詩は和歌や俳句とともに、永く日本人に親しまれて来た文学形式ですが、漢字ばかりで作られるため、気おくれしてしまう人もおられるようです。
が、そのいかめしい外見から一歩中に入ってみると、まことに多彩で魅力ある世界が現れて来ます。
それは或る種の果物に似ています。西瓜(スイカ)の、あの固い緑色の外皮の中には赤くジューシーな果肉が、また荔枝(ライチ)の、あの固いトゲだらけの、茶色の外皮の中には、丸くて白く、甘い果肉が包まれています。
このシリーズは、漢詩のそのような果実をなるべくわかりやすくお伝えするもので、名作の数々を、時代背景や作者の境遇と合わせてお話ししてゆきます。
漢字一つ一つが持つ個性的な形と意味、それらの組み合わせからさまざまにひろがってゆく境地は、まさしくファンタステイック!と言えるでしょう。
〈第三回 江南の日々〉
今回は会稽にて、当地の有名な美女の命運に思いをはせた五言古詩「西施(せいし)」から始まります。西施は春秋時代の「呉越の戦い」の時期、越から呉に送り込まれ、呉の国力を内側から疲弊させた女スパイですが、若き李白は彼女のことをどう見ているでしょうか。
そして20代後半、望郷の思いを告白した七言絶句「静夜思」、敬愛する詩人孟浩然(もうこうねん)を送った送別詩「黄鶴楼(こうかくろう)にて孟浩然の広陵に之(ゆ)くを送る」と、若き日の名作が続々と登場します。
李白はプライドが高いためか、ほかの人をあまりほめませんが、数少ない例外が孟浩然、南朝の謝眺、そしてもう一人上げるとすれば、旧知の道士元丹丘(げんたんきゅう)でしょう
このころ、なかなか引き立てが得られない中、李白はしばしば元丹丘を訪ねています。そこで今回の最後に、彼をほめたたえた雑言古詩「元丹丘の歌」を取り上げます。
