Resumen del Editor

For listeners of Atul Gawande and Paul Kalanithi, a palliative care doctor's breathtaking stories from 30 years spent caring for the dying.

Modern medical technology is allowing us to live longer and fuller lives than ever before. And for the most part, that is good news. But with changes in the way we understand medicine come changes in the way we understand death. Once a familiar and gentle process, death has come to be something from which we shy away, preferring to fight it desperately than to accept its inevitability.

Palliative care has a long tradition in Britain, where Dr. Kathryn Mannix has practiced it for 30 years. In this book, she shares beautifully crafted stories from a lifetime of caring for the dying. With insightful meditations on life, death, and the space between them, With the End in Mind describes the possibility of meeting death gently, with forethought and preparation, and shows the unexpected beauty, dignity, and profound humanity of life coming to an end.

clarity in perspective

the nature of the material was evocative and real. it paints the truest senses of all humans and our mortal condition. I have longed to have more exposure to death as I believe it gently and lovingly has called to me even as a naive child. I've sought its peace and in this book I recieved confirmation that a life worth living is better captured in a life lived with death whispering its definitive solace to our souls.

Fantastic!

I adored this book. As a United Church of Christ minister serving a church in Massachusetts, I appreciate greatly Dr. Mannix's beautiful and thoughtful approach to re-educating us about dying. Her work in palliative care and her writing about it are as much lessons in chaplaincy as medicine. I intend to pilot a book study with my Bible Study group this summer with an eye to an "All Church Read" in the fall. The need to talk about dying, learning about the process of dying, and doing the soul work of dying long before we arrive at the edge of life is critical for human beings living in an age of polarization and disconnection. Thank you, Dr. Mannix! How I would have loved working with you in my days as a nurse! I have lived an arc of caring ministry from ob/gyn nurse to ordained minister with much caring in between. I, too have accompanied both the birthing and the dying and recognized the profound and precious similarities. And I am grateful for every moment. I am a better minister for having read this book!

The most rewarding and worthwhile read

I think I should share this book with everyone I know. It’s chock full of worthwhile knowledge and a natural peaceful approach to death and dying. If you or anyone you know are frightened of death, this book is a wonderful place to start to address those concerns and help your thoughts to be more peaceful and accepting of something we must all face
